Job question (for significant other)

I am set to go to OCS in March. My girlfriend whom I met in school has a degree in Flight Dispatch and Scheduling and has considered going back to school for a Master's in Meterology.

My question is does anyone know of any civilian jobs in something related to Air Traffic, Dispatch, or Meterology that the Navy will help with? I know ultimately she wants to come with me and would most likely be fine after a while, but at the same time I know she would love it if she could do something she enjoys and use her degree in the process.

Most military bases use active-duty for ATC and metro. There are jobs in base operations that are related to "dispatch," like base Operations Duty Officer, especially on bigger bases. Now, most of those I've seen filled by crusty retired guys, but maybe she could get lucky. She'd be competing with others who have veteran's preference. Military spouse job preference isn't nearly as strong.

Maybe the local airport would be of service to you. When you find out where you are going start contacting airports in the area. It would be wise for her to gain experience now so that it will be easier for her to make a case as why she should get a job.

I'd think Milton might be kind of a dead end for her. Maybe talk with the local airlines operating out of PNS? Not really sure what her options are, but I had always thought the dispatch career path was an airline employee type gig. If she ends up doing metro, then maybe one of the local wx offices could use her.....there have been civilians working in all the military wx departments I have ever visited.

For jobs beyond working on base (most of which are front office or retail type gigs), there isn't much that the Navy can/will do to help. As a spouse, you are pretty much on your own, liek any other civilian, when it comes to finding most jobs.

Yeah, the office in Meridian made a pretty good effort to direct my wife to jobs out in town, but they were generally retail/secretary/sales kinds of things which she was not interested in / overqualified for (masters degree in a completely unrelated field). I think most of their jobs cater to more entry level positions for spouses who don't really have career aspirations.

I saw nothing in the post indicating that he had intentions of marrying his girlfriend. Just that she plans to move with him.

If that's the case then the Navy would do nothing to help her at all. She'd be exactly like any other civilian moving into the area.

Most likely will after OCS, I just didn't want this to turn into a should/shouldn't marry thread.

Depending on your timing, Pensacola could get almost as cold as Tennessee. Don't put your sweaters away when you head on down there :p

Cherry Point Base Ops is run by a couple of civilians during normal working hours. But they aren't exactly young dudes.
