A Present for the CHRISTMAS ME ...

gaijin6423

Ask me about ninjas!
I do, and will be starting work down at Lejeune soon. Since COMMARCINCWIFE repealed her draconian firearm cap (thanks in no small part to a vicious, underhanded lobbying effort by my fellow shooters), I'm going to do what I should have done and buy the biggest one can afford. Despite her best efforts, my collection keeps growing, and that AI stocked 700 just isn't going to fit in my safe. Especially with glass on it.

If you're wondering, some of my USPSA contemporaries pulled both the "At Least He Isn't at the Strip Club" and "Have You Seen How Much These Things Appreciate" arguments in the same sitting. It also got me more range time allotted during the week, as well.

I've got a Schmidt-Bender 3-12x50 PMII P3 sitting around that's been looking for a 'home' ... so who knows?? :)

You'll never regret putting an S&B on anything. I have one of their new Summits on my .257 with a #4 reticle. VERY happy with it.

I'm now taking over this thread to brag/gloat:

After a recent hunt with some old Navy buddies of mine here in Texas, my father-in-law had too much fun watching a buddy of mine hit deer at 775 yds like it was his job with a Sako TRG .308. I took one at 475 and it was probably the easiest shot I've ever taken in my life. This guy's rig was so damn good that it was just too easy. Once you get the range and ballistics down, just point and shoot. Sooo, he just ordered the follwing rig from Louisiana Precision Rifles www.louisianaprecisionrifles.com:

6.5mm Creedmoor, A5 McMillan Stock, Remington 700 - LTR-1 action - Lefthanded (We both shoot lefty), Nightforce 5.5-22x50 with NP R1 reticle, bipod and all the other trimmings. Barrel will be threaded for a supressor or muzzle brake.

I knew nothing about the 6.5 Creedmoor before all this, but it is an impressive little round. Amazing ballistics.

Yes, it is his gun, but I'm considering this my Christmas present since I am the shooter of the family. We have a new deer "blind"* on the ranch that overlooks a flat spot running along the river that we have named "Bainbridge"**. We've got about 1200 yards worth of range to hammer does & spikes and I'm looking forward to trying out every single yard of it.

*Bainbridge is not really much of a blind. When you have that kind of range between yourself and the deer, silence is not really necessary. In fact it is a group 'slob' hunt. Gin & Tonics are passed to each other with glee. 3 or 4 people are calling out ranges to the "pirates" that are stealing our gold/corn and another guy is calling out how many clicks to put into the scope based on the range. There's an app for that. A videographer is always present and the new guy gets to tend bar. Makes for a great afternoon hunt.

**Bainbridge was not my first choice of names. I was overruled when I suggested either "The Grassy Knoll" or "Old Main" (Old Main is the name of the tower at the University of Texas). I think it's too soon for most Texans, still.

P.S. A4's, while researching all of this gear, I came to the conclusion that the AI stuff is freaking awesome. Congrats on your new toy.

... my 10FP Savage..

I have a 10FP Savage, too. I LOVE that gun. Tack driver right out of the box. McMillan makes a stock for it that's pretty badass if you want to look into it.

Given the Turkey note my guess is Huglu http://www.hugluarms.com/new_page_1.htm . A lot of them came home with squadrons during our years of Northern Watch out of Incerlik.
Exactly. MB pulled into Turkey on deployment, and emailed us asking us if we wanted some. PSW's exact words were "Mama wants a pretty shotgun". Their boat wouldn't let them bring the shotguns back on the ship, but MB did find a guy that would export to a US FFL holder. They are absolutely gorgeous guns...

I don't remember which Huglu model number, but I can get that when I get home and tell you.

While we're on the LR theme, My build-

FN SPR Action- .308
Leupold Mark IV M3
TPS Rings
Harris Bipod
McMillan Adj. A3-5

I love McMillan's, great service and product. You pretty much spec out the stock from the ground up, including mounts, swivels, color, pattern, etc. AI makes makes a hell of a stock as well, it all comes down to preference.

A4s,

That stock looks suspiciously like an Accuracy International product...is it?

PSW's O/U is a 103F Huglu

I have the same gun, but different engraving.

In other news, I bought myself a house for Christmas. Go me. Although technically, I closed on the first day of Hanukkah.

Affirm. Green ... Stage 2 OD Green.

In the immediate sense, I'm trying to figure out which type bipod to use (I've got a Harris from the original stock to move = free, or I can go to an ACIS type = $375 , or a Versa-Pod = somewhere in the middle but I've heard it's got a sloppy swivel ), whether & which type of handstop to install, and whether or not to install a tail-skid (mono-pod) ...

Here's a reasonable facsimile of how easy the conversion is -- they opted for a Versa-Pod: AICS install of Remington 700

Nice stock, but the barrel doesn't do much for aesthetics:).
True, that ... posted mostly F.Y.I. to illustrate the relative ease of the action-mod.

My bbl doesn't look like that (obviously), in any case -- the link looks like it's an older rifle. But I hear one of these paperweights will do wonders for 'barrel aesthetics':

Very nice stick ...

Thanks, unfortunately my shooting doesn't do it justice. It easily holds 1/2 MOA with factory match.

Price for accessories is the one problem with AI's, just imagine if you had an AE or AW rifle and needed stuff... The Harris doesn't seem particularly conducive to AI stocks, it'll work as an interim solution but really limits the effectiveness of the chassis. The Versa Pod is great. I've always used Harris, which work great on the bench but in the field are a bit of pain (especially the non swiveling ones). Then one day I used a Versa Pod on an AR and was hooked. While the AI bipod looks pretty cool, it's hard to justify the price, going with the Versa wouldn't be a bad idea. Although with the AI adapter it does look kind of goofy hanging off the front.

As for a can, I can only dream. Just like everything else here they are illegal here. :icon_rage

Wonder how quiet those actually are. I've heard you can take that an put it on your 5.56 AR with an adapter?
