Eurocopter

I'm no engineer, but if you want more speed why not mount 1 jet engine aft of the cabin & on-centerline and use it only for the cruise phase of flight? Why does Eurocopter mount 2 big windmills out in the airstream that catch about as much drag as they produce in thrust?

They're European? Practicality has never been the strong suit of Europeans.

Much faster than 250 kts, retreating blade stall would cause the bird to roll uncontrollably, assuming you kept the main rotor spinning. Below 250kts/10,000 ft, a prop is much more fuel efficient and produces plenty of thrust(see T-6 vs. T-37).

Is the what killed off the Sikorski S-72 program? If memory serves it's max speed was around >200 KIAS.

The rotor blades will limit the max speed.

Now, if they could figure out how to fold and spread the blades in flight ...

Is it just me, or does that look like something Dr. Evil would come up with?
