This seems odd to me. IIRC Sailors or officers living on base always had the opportunity to store weapons in the armory (at least at NPA, NUW and NSF). Is this just an update to the policy that they'll be locked up? There were reports of a little hangar rash from excessive handling while they were there. I never kept them on-base so I have no first hand reports.

I agree with the above, this is no different than before. Register the guns, store them properly. Not that hard.

However, the majority of the incidents are OFF BASE, something they can not control, so what's the point to re-emphasizing the on-base policies?

As already noted, the policy has already been in place. Having just finished a tour as a base armorer, IMO the reason they are reemphasizing this is because some people don't give a shit/are ignorant to base procedures (never mind the big red and white signs outside of base that cover firearms). Others feel that their rank supercedes these policies and don't want to abide by them. Last, once it is in black and white, people can be charged easier for UCMJ offenses. I know when I first checked on board and was getting all my pubs and things in order, there were only local instructions in place nothing Navy wide, so this will address this.

Well, looks like I'm moving off base ASAP once we get back, since I don't fall under the caveats there, and I sure as hell am not putting my shit in the base armory again. Did that once at NAS Corpus.. Never again. My garand got a broken stock, bent op-rod and a broken extractor just "sitting in storage"..

Fuck that.

AN IMPORTANT CHANGE IN POLICY IS THAT
SAILORS MAY NOW STORE PERSONAL WEAPONS IN CERTAIN LOCATIONS ONBOARD NAVY
INSTALLATIONS UNDER CAREFULLY CONTROLLED CIRCUMSTANCES AND WITH THE PRIOR
WRITTEN APPROVAL OF THE INSTALLATION COMMANDING OFFICER.

3. INSTALLATION COMMANDING OFFICERS MAY AUTHORIZE THE STORAGE OF PROPERLY
REGISTERED PERSONAL WEAPONS IN ON-BASE MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING AREAS
(INCLUDING ON-BASE PUBLIC-PRIVATE VENTURE (PPV) HOUSING)

Looks like they're now giving Base CO's the option to allow them kept in base housing - though under lock and key.

So no $hit there I was

Several bases have had that option for awhile now. Just have to have it properly secured in your house. (ie not allowed in the Lodge, BEQ/BOQ or Barracks.)

4. ALL PERSONAL FIREARMS APPROVED BY THE INSTALLATION COMMANDING OFFICER FOR
TRANSPORT ON A NAVY INSTALLATION SHALL BE TRANSPORTED ONLY AFTER INSTALLATION
SECURITY HAS BEEN NOTIFIED,
THE FIREARMS ARE UNLOADED, AND THEY ARE IN THE
TRUNK OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE HAS NO TRUNK, THE FIREARM MUST BE
DISASSEMBLED, OR SECURED WITH A TRIGGER OR CHAMBER-STYLE LOCK, AND STORED IN A
LOCKED CONTAINER. AMMUNITION WILL BE TRANSPORTED IN A SEPARATE COMPARTMENT
FROM THE ONE IN WHICH THE FIREARM IS STORED.

This sounds like a royal PITA. You gotta call Security for a trip to the range from base housing? Ain't worth it...

This all brings to mind the time at PAX that I needed the XO's signature to keep my Navy issued match pistols. He was a huge gun control type and sat on the paperwork for 6 weeks, refusing to sign it.

I finally had to request mast to get it signed. He had no recourse but to sign it.

A few weeks later we went to an elevated DEFCON state and he discovered that he was required by NAS instructions to post armed sentrys on the flight line. He had NO qualifed personnel, so guess who he called to quick get some folks to the range and get them qualified. Karma is a bitch...

Another problem is that base armories are going away. Little Creek got rid of their base one and each unit had to make arrangements to store its own weapons. I was at TACRON while we were working out all the solutions. Ended up getting our own armory but had to beg for space from RIVGRU for a while.

That sucks, did they end up taking care of it?

I lived in base housing in Corpus and Enid. Neither time did I have much problem getting the weapons on base or to my house. I just pulled up to the front gate, said my shotgun is in the back or behind the drivers seat (if I had the truck) and they followed me with a patrol car. I got out, grabbed the gun case, waved, and they drove away.

That being said, I will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, store my guns in an armory, and suggest that you would have to be retarded to do so.

I was visiting my father and stepmom at the base my stepmom was the Commanding Officer of. I stored my Marlin .22 at HER armory while I was there, and it came back grungy (like it had about 500 rounds run throughit and not cleaned) and with dings/chips in the stock, barrel, and reciever (like someone pried a jammed round out with a Leatherman) and this was on the base that my own mom ran.

I saw my buddy get his rifle wrecked at Vance AFB, and he filed a claim (never heard much after that) and they were rude to boot at the armory.

My suggestion for those in the BEQ/BOQ is to make friends with a married sailor on base and use their house. Easier to do than dealing with the idiot MA's.

Store mine in my safe in housing on base; it was a pita to take them into security and register them with the girl who knew nothing about guns, but other than that it;s a fine arrangement.

For those of you who live in family housing and store guns in your home.....every time I went TAD and checked in at the front gate to get my rental car pass, the person at pass & decal always said "you sure do have a lot of guns". I was never offended by that statement; however, it does draw my curiosity as to why that information is made available to all military bases. I always wondered if that info included serial numbers as well.
