When did the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation become standard flare for USNA, and what did it get awarded for? Being the best Naval Academy in the Navy ( the whole "either valorous or meritorious achievement compared to other units performing similar service"), or just something to replace the GWOT ribbon?

I've seen pretty much every USNA bubba down here sporting that new piece, but I am curious what for.

I just heard today that the whole Academy got a MUC. A guy in the squadron told me they all got 'em, and he didn't even know why.

NavyTimes said:
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (NNS) -- The Naval Academy received the Meritorious Unit Commendation from the chief of naval personnel (CNP) Dec. 3.

Vice Adm. Mark E. Ferguson, CNP, presented the citation to the more than 4,000-strong Brigade of Midshipmen during a lunchtime ceremony held in the academy's dining facility, King Hall.

The award recognized the academy's significant achievements from June 1, 2007, through Aug. 31, 2008. The Meritorious Unit Commendation recognizes superior mission accomplishment and is comparable to achievements which would merit the presentation of a Bronze Star Medal to an individual.

The award, signed by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, specifically cited the academy's leadership development and alignment with the fleet; record low plebe-summer attrition; highest graduation rate of any service academy; academic and athletic achievements; community service; diversity outreach efforts; and serving as an institution of national prominence, including hosting the 2007 Annapolis Middle East Peace Conference.

According to Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler, "This award is a testimony of the focus and hard work of the Naval Academy team, exemplified by the professionalism of the Brigade of Midshipmen and the dedication of the great faculty and staff we have at this national institution."

This is the Naval Academy's second Meritorious Unit Commendation. The last time the Naval Academy received the Meritorious Unit Commendation was in 1998.

You can tell they're boat schoolers when they have the McDonalds and two salad bars on bottom, Dennys on top. Might have a khaki combo and SWOter too, technique only.

That's nothing. I went to the ASU AF ROTC commissioning ceremony a week ago and saw underclass cadets with ridiculous amounts of chest candy. The various ribbons were probably given for meritorious achievements such as "Best Deep Throat technique" or "Taking it in the can without a gagball"

My brother's AF ROTC unit at Miami (the real one, in Ohio) wasn't allowed to wear any of their ROTC medals at their commissioning ceremony. Everyone agreed that it would have been gay had they actually done so.

+1.....all we wore at mine was the McDonalds ribbon. We also never wore ROTC ribbons around when off-campus doing official things. Perhaps the AF regs state differently.

That clears things up a bit. The graduating seniors didn't have any ribbons, but the cadets who were helping out were wearing theirs.
