End of Herndon?

Seems like the Class of '69 had a plan. 00:01:30
Did they not lard it up that year or did that class have it all in one sock?
It's actually the Class of '72. They completed Herndon in '69. I've heard that chicken wire (they wrapped it in chicken wire and scrambled up) was involved.

So I take it after that they have a rule about no external aids?
You are correct. After my class had its epic, historical struggle - they now limit the amount and type of tape used to hold the cover to the top (the individual who put it on top used two rolls of packing tape, the kind with the string in it, and super glue to hold it down). We had someone on top of Herndon in about an hour and a half/two hours - it took another two hours, and a cover device to saw through the tape.

I heard it was the 2/C who wrapped it in chicken wire, thinking it would allow them to stick on twice as much lard. Turned out, it just gave the plebes a ton of handholds.

The 3 minute time, IIRC, was the one where the plebes brought a cargo net and threw it over the top. After that: no external aids allowed.

And if you were the great class of 07, you weren't even allowed to wear shoes to climb Herndon. Ah, the memories. . .

Of course it can't be a real herndon thread without the video. The guy does what about 95% of male midshipmen think, and subsequently got hammered for it.

They'll end up being better officers because of the lard-lack; the Academy wouldn't do something like that unless they had a valid reason.
I'm sure they did... And I think the reason is that the Supe was a nerdy little dweeb that didn't get a chance to get in on the Herndon action as a Plebe. Either that, or too many years breathing recycled farts. For all his talk about preparing for battle, he's awful risk averse. Maybe he should realize that not everyone "goes to war" under water...

Two minutes, five seconds from start to finish today. I guess my class' record stands.

They probably gave everyone a trophy and had orange slices and juice boxes afterwards.

I think its actually somewhat fitting. Hearing the stories from my company, they didnt have a real Plebe Summer. Do they really deserve a real Herndon either?

I don't know, however, if I would have taken the tack of some of these mids and expressed my feelings to the Baltimore Sun.

What goes on at the Academy always seems to get big press around Maryland (and on the interwebs these days what with blogs like CDR Salamander and The USNI blog giving these goings on top billing). I'm sure there was no shortage of of frustrated mids for reporters to find.

One nice thing about NROTC is that you didn't have to deal with all this drama.
