FDR's speech to Congress still gives me chills.

Here's on to all our fallen brothers. :icon_drin

Too bad it seems half the kids in my generation have no idea what happened at Pearl Harbor, let alone when it happened and the sacrifices that were made. I guess sparkling vampires are just too important.

R.I.P., and my regards and utmost respect and gratitude :icon_drin

Ya know, they just don't do propaganda like they used to.. You just don't see slogans like that anymore "OUR BULLETS WILL DO IT"... Amen.

I'm a big WWII history buff (wrote a 25 pg. paper about the battle of Leyte Gulf) and I can't help but draw comparisons between the generations that fought then and are fighting now. Like E26 said, it seems like us young folks are all obsessed with stupid bullshit, but there's a good deal out there fighting the good fight, defending the American way. I think that the men and women who fought and supported the fight during WWII would be proud of our military today. God bless 'em all. Past and present.

I think they'd be proud.. I chalk it up to a difference with this modern day war... I think our troops today fight with the same resolve as they did back in WWII.

I think WWII ended up having much more universal national (and international)support than this war has. We were, for the most part, as a nation, committed at all costs to win the war. Our entire country worked for it.

Take Iwo Jima... We lost almost 7,000 men in one battle.

Look at our recent 'war on terror' or whatever it's called now... Figures aren't agreed upon, but we're coming up on 10 years, and we've lost around 5,000 men.... This casualty count is thrown around by politicians to levy support for pulling out of Afghanistan and Iraq. That the costs are just 'too great'. American's weren't happy back in the 40s when they picked up a newspaper and read the horrible news, but there wasn't as much dissent as there was now... It seems as if back then, it strengthened their resolve to 'win the war'.

I'll bet the 5,000 men that sacrificed their lives in the last 10 years would want us to have that kind of resolve and determination.

It just seemed as if the mentality back then was, "defeat the enemy as quickly and ferociously as possible, and at any and all costs".

I think this aggressive mentality should've been taken with the pursuit of Bin Laden and weeding the terrorism out of Afghanistan.

End threadjack.

Am I the only one who is pissed that none of the major news organizations has bothered with any Pearl Harbor news/rememberances/headlines? It's all Tiger Woods, and Afghanistan and White house party crashers, etc. Not a thought to the sacrifices of the greatest generation, not by a single news agency.

I'd be among that group with you, but by and large I got fed up with the news agencies long ago, and no longer go out of my way to watch them. If its not on the front page of the morning paper, or on every channel on my TV, i can for the most part live without it.

When was the last time you heard anything about Iraq? I guess it might be that I just don't watch at the same time as they report about it, but it seems to be all by forgotten.

Eh, who cares about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan when we can find out who/what Tiger Woods is/was banging?

But let's not let this devolve into a "God every news outlet sucks!" thread.

I Remember!

As one of the elder (read as in fine wine) AWs, I was 2 days past my 7th birthday when Dad mustered his brood of 5 (9 yrs. to 2 mos.) at the radio to hear Pres. Roosevelt give his "day of infamy" speech. I was very confused, & it hit home when Dad (age 33) announced he was joining the Navy.
He was turned down because of age/dependents. He kept trying and finally in early '44, was accepted. Went to Boot, GM school then was assigned to a Navy 5" 38 gun crew on a civilian-manned Liberty Ship SS Art Young. They were known as Armed Guard. Spent the rest of the war on round trips between Hull Eng. & Northern Russian ports. Fortunately, the U-Boat threat was greatly reduced by this time & the ship survived the war unharmed.
After VJ day, his ship was in-port in Brooklyn Navy Yard. He brought me down to see the ship (50 mi. trip) & spend 1 night aboard! Man, I got to sleep in a real Sailor's bunk. His Shipmates fed me real Hershey bars (scarce during the war) until I barfed!
From that time on, I knew what I was going to do "when I grow up", and I DID!!!:D

Is it me or do these posters invoke a strong sense of patriotism and duty into everyone?
