The President visits Dover

I am a cynical bastard.....
I think that this man and his administration see everything through a political prism. There isn't a single move he makes that is not contrived or calculated after consulting his oracles and the exit polling data. I really truly hope that he meant what he said that this experience was "very poignant" and "sobering" for him...(has he not realized we've been at war for the better part of a decade??) This post is not meant to be an ad hominem attack on the Pres....but I do question his motives, and I just want a President that will not be afraid to fall on his sword 3 years from now to do what is right for his country, not worrying about re-election.

Edit: absolutely outstanding article from the FT's of London....not exactly a bastion of Conservatism.

Yeah, that'll never happen.

I give him major credit for going to Dover and giving honor to the fallen, but after his speech here at Jax last week, I too wonder if he's using it for political purposes. Last week he said what he's been saying for many months now- that he's going to think long and hard before sending troops into harm's way. I'm afraid he's going to say his feelings after seeing the dead at Dover are leading him not to commit more troops when commanders (ie McChrystal) have said they were needed. I hope like hell I'm wrong though. Since 2001 both administrations have not been committing the number of people needed to the war effort and I hope that stops.

I'm a cynic as well, but I don't think this is unique to the current office holder. If you're a professional politician, everything you do is political. I do give props to GWB for his very personal approach with the families of falen service members. That takes balls and a lot of heart.

Obama has had more than 100 opportunities to go to Dover since he took office. He even changed the policy so that media could cover it the dignified transfer. Did he visit before changing that policy? No. Did he visit after the policy was changed to see how it was going? No. The timing of this (and the policy that he set months ago to allow this photo op) is a cheap political stunt, nothing more.

As per the Jax visit..
I have more of a beef with SECNAV Mabus. We have real problems in the fleet. We have Marines and Sailors dying on a daily basis. And SECNAV says that his most paramount mission is having "a great green fleet" with the smallest carbon footprint possible by 2015?? Am I missing something?? POTUS and SECNAV's visit was ostensibly to unveil the new "green" facility at Jax if I'm not mistaken.

Political bullshit of the highest order. At least the salute the clown in command gave was correct in format and style. He doesn't have a clue and could care less if it doesn't move his poll points upwards.
I PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THE TROOPS WHO ARE IN HARMS WAY.

You got all that from that quick media video-bite?

Wow.

I didn't vote for the guy, but I certainly didn't get as bitter an impression as the above from the video. Give him the benefit of the doubt.

Political stunt or not, it's also the first time a sitting president has gone to Dover for this purpose since the GWOT began, if you know what I mean.

You can read this as genuine care for the troops and the magnitude of their sacrifice, or extreme political theater. While it could be nearer to either extreme, the truth is almost certainly somewhere between the two. This should be obvious.

What does the policy change have to do with anything? His predecessor did not change the policy and also did not make a trip to Dover. What do you have to say about that? If Obama has had 100 opportunities in 11 months of office. His predecessor had thousands in 8 years.

People's inability to look at events through anything other than a partisan lens never ceases to baffle me. People drawing wild, extremist conclusions based on nothing but their own opinions - pathetic.

I don't know if President Bush went to Dover, but I do know that he went to Walter Reid and Bethesda regularly and you didn't hear or see it on the news.

Precisely.

In regards to foreign policy, Obama has not deviated much from the Bush administration at all. It's funny to see right-wingers bash Obama for the same reasons they praised Bush.

Are you serious about this or you just don't know what you are talking about? It is getting absurd around here.
