USS Pueblo

What Flash said makes me think. Say, once upon a time some DDG or FFG is headed back out from the an absolutely rocking port call in Chinhae. They pass the Pueblo under tow by pure chance. VID ensues and then.....


Given the climate of the day do do you think the Skipper would have the sand to call GQ and get our ship back? Sent it up the chain? Ignored the whole thing?

You don't choose to go to war on your own, even if there is still just a truce. It would go up the chain.

It would be a moot point anyways, I doubt there is a SWO out there that could pick her out of a line-up.

Several dozen other great examples of how the Press can get you at least extra attention and at most flat out killed that were shown to us in SERE.

But good thing duels were outlawed, having personally witnessed this:

At the Miramar O'Club and at a table of perhaps 8 players, and an equal or much greater number watching (these were big games with cash stacked high on the table and it drew spectators), sat a retired CDR Bucher. In civilian clothes, he was still senior in a game that involved mostly O-3s and O-4s, with maybe a token O-2 or O-5.

Another CDR in uniform rose from his table nearby and came over to our table.

He said, "You're CDR Bucher, aren't you?" The good Commander turned to him and said, "Yes I am." At which time the man standing thrust his full drink directly into CDR Bucher's face.

CDR Bucher rose and instantly attacked the intruder with a vengeance! It took all eight of us to pull him off, and to tell the drink throwing CDR he'd better leave – Now!

All that done, we sat down and continued on with the game.​

[But it was a real tragedy, after all the pain and suffering he endured in North Korea, while brutal, it was short-lived compared to some of the many personal affronts he suffered for many years, and long after his scape-goating court martial. May he RIP, finally]

The perception of CDR Bucher is such that there is even a JAG episode that calls him a total failure. I was somewhat surprised to come across that genuine piece of history even though I recognise most of the viewers probably did not understand the context.

I can't verify the accuracy of this. In the book "Scorpion Down" the author makes a case for the Soviets putting the North Koreans up to siezing the USS Pueblo. The purpose for this was to get a Navy code machine so that they could use the information that John Walker was feeding them. He then tries to tie it into his theory that this let the Soviets know where the USS Scorpion was so that they could sink her in retaliation for the US supposedly sinking the K-129 in the Pacific. In my opinion the author makes a compelling case for the siezure of the Pueblo, but his case that this led to the sinking of the Scorpion leaves a lot to be desired.

Good Question.

The answer is "No" as of the mid 1980's. I can only speak about DH level and below. I hope this has changed since. Such preparation would be prudent.

Unless of course we no longer hang out others to dry for political purposes.
