At least that is what the articles would want you to believe...

Dumb move on the part of a few people, all they had to do was give the people a heads-up, it's not like the President was in the plane...

Some pix of the "event"

I'd be willing to bet some staffers just lost their jobs. How hard would it have been to send a press release saying "OBTW, there is a VC-25 that will be circling over downtown Manhattan tomorrow. It's been coordinated with the FAA and there is no threat to anyone." I mean, for crying out loud, there are people in that city who saw friends and/or family turned into air pollution a few years back. You can't blame them for being a little sensitive to low-flying jumbo jets in the same general area, especially when other people are setting off alarms, etc. etc.

Agreed. 9/11 was downright apocolyptic for many people who work in downtown Manhattan. It's very poor headwork to think there wouldn't be any repercussions to doing something like this for both the city and the Federal officials.

Pro-rec'd INTEL!!!!!
Ok obviously not the smartest thing in the world, and pretty insensitive given what this city has been through. But as a New Yorker, I loved this quote:

"So did the events of Monday scare him? 'To tell you the truth, not really,' Mr. Shimon said. 'I didn't think it was such a big deal. I'm a New Yorker.'"

Yea, seriously. I expected more from my brethren than hysterics. Most of those wall street brokers live in Jersey anyway.

Another non-story made into a national crisis by the media. Anyone notice how this year's 'bug going around' happens to be killing people? And instead they put the headline 'New Yorkers go Bonkers at the Sight of the Most Recognizable Plane in the Universe' on the front page of CNN?

Please. Yes, it was a crappy job by the soon-to-be-former advance team, but if this is what we're judging the administration on, we might need to rethink how we grade our Presidents.

/rant.

I don't think anybody is really "grading" the President on this. And while the blue and white paint scheme and the "United States of America" painted on the side was probably a relief to those watching the event through a telescope, I think the average New Yorker seeing a 747 circling Manhattan shadowed by an F-16 is justified in being somewhat freaked the fvck out.

So you really just want to swap one hysterical news story for another. Swine Flu, which is the bug I assume you are referring to, is like to be just as anti climatic as SARS, and it definitely doesn't need more news coverage than it is getting.

I know that "The Greatest Generation" would shake their heads in disgust, when considering the media coverage, and those who were "scared". Can you imagine folks during WWII acting like such a bunch of pansies?
Maybe, in a few hundred years, some folks will evolve to have no spine and a yellow birthmark (in the shape of a stripe) down their backs.

Someone needs fired... after this and the teleprompter mutiny, what will the approval ratings be?

Seriously? You think this is going to really matter to the average Obabma fan? Besides, this was a DOD event from what I've read - nothing to do with the White House. I'm no Democrat, but if you're going to criticize the President on something, make it something legitimate. All of the Republican hand wringing over Obama and how they all can't wait to point out the tiniest perceived flaw is embarrassing and pathetic. This is the kind of stuff we criticized the liberals for when Bush was in office, but as it turns out, the right is no better at playing the game.

We already have it and it is made of reflective material!!

Oh please... where was the public outcry and panic when a certain "low flying aircraft" made a wet landing in the hudson..

These articles also stink of some people [Bloomberg] covering their asses.

If they thought it was such a reprehensible decision, then why didn't they say anything a week ago.

I give this thing a -1 for headwork to both parties involved.

oh and another -1 goes to the Wall Street Journal for managing to include the swine-flu into all of this craziness..
