First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

From everything I have gathered, there are some fundamental differences between flying big jets and a prop aircraft like the P-3.....if this is true, are they just planning on having studs jump straight from the TC-12/44 into the RAG for the jet, or could they do T-1/jet appreciation training or something like that as well?
No AF training. The FRS will handle the transition from Advanced T44/C12s to the P8A.

Good looking plane. I wonder how long we hear the question, what % get P-8's?? Which could fall under, what % get jets?
I am sure it is going to be a feeding frenzy for those first NO-Ps trying to get into that P8A pipeline.

Seems like it will be a pretty cool airframe with a lot of capabilities. Not to mention that it would be pretty impressive for those guys/girls who want to end up with SWA in their next life :)

It'd be the perfect camo scheme for the jet too...get it all decked out in SWA colors and no ones the wiser...till it drops a torpedo on your candy diesel boat ass!

It's all fun and games til you get smoked by this:

...or maybe this was just my imagination run amok.

Where's the wing hardpoints? Are those added on when carrying ordie (or am I just not recognizing them)?

Snazzy looking jet. I like how the VP side has gone back to glossy gray.

I'd doubt the P-3's will be kept around the Reserves. At least, not for very long. Big Navy has a distinct distaste these days for just keeping a few of anything around. Notice there's no Reserve F-14's or S-3's.

Also, I wonder if Big Navy will consider sending P-8 studs to train with the AF, since they fly basically the same airframe with some differences. TC-12s are *supposed* to be gone in 5 years and everyone will fly T-44Cs (glass cockpit). Of course they have to actually get all the 44s upgraded and finish the sims... I still wonder how the move from light twin to big jet will go, but they seem to be more concerned about the transition to modern glass cockpit and teaching the CRM required to use the automation, FMS, etc

So pretty! I can't wait to see one in real life.
:)

p.s. Yes, a plane can be 'pretty'! So there!

Are you talking about the C-40? Or the T-43?

The T-43 is going away with Randolph - the AF Nav studs will just train on the T-6 and T-1. The Air Force C-40's, AFAIK, are odds-and-ends planes for medium theater lift, like the Navy C-40A's.

It would make sense for P-8 pilots to train on the T-1, since that's what it was designed for - a light jet with big jet handling for training big jet pilots - but I'd be really surprised if it happened. There's no money for buying more jet trainers right now, we've already got the T-44C program going, and the AF is done sharing the T-1's they've got with the Navy.

I meant C-40, though not in the sense that Navy folks would actually fly them....just that the AF has taken folks from the T-1 and successfully "upgraded" them to things like the C-40 and larger. T-44 still seems like an overpowered light twin to me, in terms of performance and operating envelope. Also, in my short time here, it has become apparent that jets are flown somewhat differently than props. Seems like it would be an interesting transition to make on such a comparatively large aircraft.

This certainly brings a whole new ballgame to town. A new airplane and 737 to boot. Certainly not a bad way to go for someone who has airline pilot on his agenda. After seeing my good bud make $159k plus his $42k retirement his third year at Southwest, could be an inspiration....depending on the economic state of the company.

Similar planes, but the P-8 has raked wingtips instead of winglets...

They do pretty much the same thing in improving efficiency and cutting drag, but I guess the raked wingtips are more efficient/cheaper than blended winglets.

So, stupid question from the wife...
These are 'relatively' the same plane, right? Why is the SWA wingtips more vertical that the P-8A wingtips?

Am I over-thinking this?

This question is turning into the Godwin's Law of P-8 threads! ;)

The original design was for winglets on P-8 (like the SWA jet), but then the Navy decided raked wingtips would be more desirable. They both accomplish the same purpose, it's just that the raked tips *may* be better for fatigue life and carrying wing stores.

Edit: Schoolbubba beat me to it. Jerk.
