Could use some running advice.

^^No kidding. sciguy, I don't want to pile on you or anything since it seems like you're trying your best to lose weight, but for any other potential candidates reading his post- that's almost all bum gouge (BAD ADVICE).

Don't ever go for a walk to help get you in shape. Try to run outside (or on an indoor track) whenever you can. Use treadmills if you have to...ellipticals are worthless (same pretty much goes for those bike machines).

Hills CAN hurt you if you're overdoing it- this especially applies if you're lifting too (as you should be). Doing serious squats can make your knees sore, and that would just be exacerbated by running hills.

To address of sci's diet advice- there's a lot of really shitty stuff to eat in grocery stores and a lot of good stuff in restaurants. Just be smart.

.

Walking will help you get in shape, but definitely won't get you to the type of shape you need at an OCS-type environment. Put 50lbs on your back, and that walk suddenly becomes a workout.

I'm not a huge fan of machines in general (Crossfit guy), but to dismiss the WUBA chariot and bike as worthless is a bit extreme. In the hands of most gym patrons, they are, because most people use them at a pace slow enough to read People magazine. Amp it up with intervals, sprints, and such, and they become more useful.

Thanks for calling me out on that one, I did not mean to imply slow walks take off fat better or faster than runs. I use treadmills, which I know I should not, but I keep the walking pace high on them. I had some problems with my knees and back. I wish I had a track nearby and I really should focus more on my running. I started out at 6'5'' over 240 pounds (very bad shape), and am down to 213 but I have been working on it for the last 4 or 5 months. When I started out I was not in any shape to even think about running distances so I got used to walking them. There are certainly much better ways to do it. Thank you midn09 for correcting me, and I will refrain from commenting anymore on workout programs of which I know little.

True, anything done at high intensity will help you. I love the 'WUBA chariot,' I'm definitely going to use that one. One of the major problems is the "calorie counters" on those are WAAAY off, so people get on there, jerk around/watch tv/read for 30 minutes, and think they got a great workout.

I had a good 25 pounds I needed to take off when I started running. I found it came off a lot faster when I increased my distance. A run will shed pounds faster yes but walking covers much farther distances. After 7-8 miles of run/walk, my average weight loss was 2-3 pounds, maybe not a pound for every two miles, closer to three. That was just a saying I put in my head to make sure I never did any distance less than 2 miles. I don't lose that kind of weight anymore.

...

You don't seriously think you're burning 10,500 calories every time you go for a 7-8 mile run/walk, right?

Sweat = water. You gain it back once you start hydrating...

Flying Toaster,
My best advice, never take advice about physical fitness from someone in the Navy, unless they wear a Trident on their chest. Look to Marines for these things, which I guess is why you chose to post this thread in the "U.S. Marine Corps (USMC)" forum? Good call there.

Caution: This post is may open a can of worms, flaring tempers, and possibly causig cerebral aneurysms. Nothing but love for my Navy brethren, I know we Marines have plenty to make fun of, I just have to get my shots when I see an opening.

Dirt is a much better option than asphalt. Maybe there's a track nearby--

If you do run down those hills be careful of your form, shoes, and keep some extra bend in your knees for shock-absorbing, and to deter shin-splints.
