Here are two fairly recent scenarios to think about. And gives reason to carry for protection.

First case- Joseph Duncan. In 2005 Shitbag Duncan killed three people, then took two children up into the national forest in Montana. He went to a semi-remote campsite, raped both of them and killed one of them. Do you think that if you happened upon the scene with your wife and kids he would just "let you go?" Naw, the psychopath would kill you, rape your wife and kids then kill them.

Second one, last year- Three or four teenagers kill two other teenagers then dump their bodies up on a pass called Dobson Pass. Not far off a road, and very accessable to Joe Public. The press made it sound like it was waaayyy up in the wilderness but it wasn't, you can drive to it in the family sedan. Been there many times, huckleberry picking with Mrs. Gunner and kids. Do you think that if you happened upon them with your wife and kids, while they were dumping the bodies, they would just "let you go?"

Not trying to sound "alarmist" but this shit does happen.

while the arguments are valid, i think you might have trouble running this by an anti-gun enthusiast simply because he/she will dig up some example of a kid taking Dad's gun and playing the Red Power Ranger (or something to that effect).

And they could also find some examples of some kid finding his dad's keys and trying to play speed racer. A gun is a tool. A dangerous one, but no more dangerous then dozens you could find in a hardware store. Poor headwork on the owners part, in the form of poor storage, does not make a gun anymore evil than any other tool. If you had a nail gun you would keep it out of reach of the kids too. You're gonna have to come up with a better argument than that.

I hate the Car/Gun analogy

In no where does it say that owning a car is a protected right.. and it isn't (it's always been explained to be a privilage) . however owning a gun is specifically mentioned in the Constitution..

A car is personal property, which you have a right to. Driving it is a privilege, which can be revoked if you use it dangerously. Very much like a gun, in fact.

OP - Not just motivation for packing, but also for being damn good at using it.


Torpedo- That happened to a family in my very small town growing up. A big family, they were playing cowboys and indians, and mixed a real gun with the play ones. 5th grader died.

Gotta lock the guns up. Great family, but idk how a parent could allow even the slightest possibility of that happening.

well thats not really the purpose of this thread and that is a debate that'll never get resolved.

Justice Scalia specifically covered this in his opinion in D.C. vs. Heller. He specifically noted that in striking down the D.C. gun ban, the court was not casting doubt on the constitutionality of barring certain people from acquiring firearms, e.g. felons, wife-beaters, and crazy people. So it has been resolved in the highest court in the land.
