Military Aviation Museum Hangar Dance (Va Beach, VA)

There is a "Hangar Dance" in the mold of the upcoming big band night at the Pcola NMNA, here in the Tidewater area.

It's February 14th (Saturday). You know your ball-n-chain wants to do something. This is how you can make it aviation related. It's WWII themed. So dress vintage. I'm wearing AWGs but with mini-wings on the pisscutter and a row of ribbons.

Here is the website (buy tickets online)

Yes, there is a single people table. I'm going for the aircraft and food. I could give a crap less about the hallmark holiday it happens to fall on.

Ha, I thought of you and the AWGs when I heard about this through another source. Mike and I have had our tickets for a couple weeks now. Hey, any event with a big band and food and drink (singular, alas) included can't be too bad, right? I've even got a vintage 1940s suit from my grandmother--not quite as slick as AWGs, but it is period.

Cool. I won't be the only person under 40 there.

I suspect we may still be the youthful outliers at this party by a fair margin, but I'd much rather have live music and beautifully restored airplanes (the vast majority of which are in flying condition, according to the website) than some gooshy candlelight dinner.

On the morning of the 14th, there is supposed to be a seminar about and flight demonstration of a P-51D. I don't think we'll be able to make it out for that, but this "Hallmark holiday" has at least the potential to be all about aviation.

I'm back.

It was an awesome time. I really wish they would do something like this on a non-valentines day thing. I even got up and danced without tequila being involved!

If something like this comes up, GO!

And I really wish ladies fashions of the WWII era would make a comeback. So much nicer than what I see out in the bars normally.

And yes, there is a blog up.

I stumbled on one of these events in DC area a few years ago and was similarly impressed. And there are other events throughout the year with Doc Scantlin. Check out his website. The crowd crossed several generations and the Girlfriends and other performers were relatively younger as was a crowd that follws the bands and dresses in period costumes. It was like being in the movies (there were several folks in authentic AWG unifroms at event I went to!). Maybe the AW DC crowd might want to RDZ there (Schugg, Mumbles, Flash?).

Unfortunately that would require a strange thing called "class" to reappear in American culture.

I could tell you but I would have to kill you
MB,
Would have love to have made this event. I had went to a hangar dance for the commemorative air force one time representing the navy in wash khakis and tie, it was a great time although there weren't that many people my age there. (Id post a pic but non of them turned out nice).

The swing community is small overall but there are members all over the world. First thing I did when I decided to go down under was to try to hook up with local swing dancers who would be able to give me the lay of the land or host me.
