New API Class up policy

Although just about everyone in A-pool has probably already heard this, some of those reporting soon may not have. Yesterday the way they fill slots for API classes has changed.

They used to class up based on your Time on Board (when you reported in); they're now using your commissioning date instead. This means if you spent a lot of time stashed or doing OHARP or whatever, you may class up pretty quicly when you get here. The revamped roster for next week has people with anywhere from 3 to 25 weeks at NASC. They're also greatly increasing the number of students in each class.

So they can pass the log-jam on to the VT's. Instead of sitting on your ass prior to API, you can sit on your ass waiting to class up in Corpus or Whiting. At least you can study NATOPS and your FTI there. Woo-hoo

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does that apply for all services? In other words, do all Marine students automatically get a 6+ month bump on their Navy peers due to TBS when checking in?

I would much rather be in the yet-to-be tarnished milton VT pool than A-pool. Still get to phone muster four out of five days there :)

Edit: updated with current info

Marine pool is a little/lot different. Other than not having to deal with the pettiness that I perceive to be the Navy A-Pool (sorry guys, perception is a bitch) the class up priorities are different.

It goes in this order:

1. TBS class
2. Report Date
3. Completion of API class-up prereqs(API, NOMI, etc)
4. TBS class rank

There are 7 to 9 a week pushing right now with about 160 to 180 in the pool. Do the math and you're here for awhile.

Phone muster <0800 every day, and then a 10 minute COB muster at the end of the day. There are PLENTY of stash billets, but still not everybody is stashed. Some are pretty heavy and time intensive (AMS Plt Cmdr comes to mind). Other are pretty quick and easy (Paint Ball FEX AI).

Not in Corpus. . .

Whatever dude. Buy a fishing rod and some waders and put a hurting on the local redfish population. :icon_smil This is a great time of year in Baffin Bay. This is when the big bull reds come in.

Austin and San Antonio are just a few hours away, and all of the college girls are back in town. If you can't find fun down there, you just don't have it in ya.

This is a great time of year on the gulf coast.

So....do AF studs have a completely different pool they are in...or are they also thrown in with navy pool? If so, when I get back from IFS any idea on the wait time?

Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force all have separate pools. International students are also in their own groups, and I imagine Coasties must be as well.

As for wait time...I'm not in any kind of position to know, but it sure seems next to impossible to guess these days.

Are there other classes or courses a guy can take while he is waiting to class up for API?

Have you not been paying attention?

All spare time should be used getting up to PT standards set by the Aircrew School.

That is all. :icon_tong

Seriously, the best use of your time in A-pool is spent relaxing and enjoying what Pensacola has to offer.

Like...voluntarily? I don't think I even understand the question.

You'll have to take DIVOLC before classing up (at least that's the policy at the moment), but really...all this super-moto "can I take other classes for self-enrichment" stuff is a bit absurd if you ask me. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you work. Well...not literally "work" and not literally "tomorrow," but still...you know what I mean.

Just a head's up to any Marines on here waiting for API. It was just passed that we'll have 13 slots per week for the next 5 weeks.

I just thought there might be something interesting to do in the short term. My buddy from West Point spent temporary duty in a short course that involved large amounts of C4. There is something utterly satisfying about blowing up a grand piano just to inspect the aftermath.

while i was stashed before getting down to Pcola I looked into going to jump/dive school. its next to impossible because of cost. your detailer will let you go as long as they are no cost orders, and the schools only accept funded orders.

I was so close to going to dive school though. they had a few unused spots that were meant to go to to sub officers. unfortunately by the time I called they were gone and it was the end of the fiscal year.
