Threadjack since this use of the word beautiful to modify the place Pensacola made me chuckle a bit. Has anyone else seen/been amused by the billboard at the corner of Lillian and Gulf Beach advertising the opera and symphony that says "Pensacola: Cultural Mecca?" I laugh every time I drive by it.

Have not seen that yet. Good stuff though. It's like the UWF billboard on the way to the front gate that says 6 Astronauts graduated from UWF. Yea back when we had aviation degrees.

Agreed. Was about to post the same, then I saw this. Pensacola wins. They have seafood and good beaches. I guess hurricanes have a way of scrubbing a town clean though. Corpus is dirty. Never before have I paid so much for utilities and gotten so little in return.

It's all relative...look what else is within 2 hours drive...not much unless you consider Mobile a happening place!

While I agree that PCOLA is far better than some of our other Navy training bases, such as Milton, Meridian, Corpus Christi, it's still not the CULTURAL MECCA that some claim it to be.

i concur...when i first came to corpus, i was hopeful that it would be better than p-cola, not to be though. living on the island here is nice because it's so close to base. in p-cola i lived up by UWF and put my life on the line on hwy 90 going up to whiting everyday. the HEB is pretty sweet as well but the scummy town, oppressive heat, dirty beaches and strong cockroach population in corpus helps to give p-cola the edge. the base here sucks to. gym is horrible, traffic is the worst i've scene on a base and the golf course is brown. what was said about the utitlity companies being horrible is true as well. I kept the AC on 80 over the summer and the electric bill was still well north of $200 (2 bedroom apartment) in july, aug and sept.
