Anyone with PHP/FDF experience?

Hey all,

I am trying to improve a website that I've been working on and I am curious if anyone on this site has the expertise to help me out.

I want my site to have the ability to take the users name/address/SSN/etc... and be able to automatically fill out various PDF documents to return to the user.

This is going to be used in the application process for OCS. Since everyone currently has to fill out there name/address a gazillion times for the application, security clearance, and other various forms, my goal is to make the process easier.

Please PM me if you think you can offer some help. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then don't PM me because you can't help.:icon_wink

Thanks.

OK, a few things about your post:

1. Did you really intend the title to be PHP/FDF, or did you mean PDF?

2. Have you read the documentation for pdflib in the PHP manual?

3. Asking people to PM you about information like this is sorta silly unless you're offering money or have some type of privacy concerns or something. What's the point in keeping it private when you're asking on a public forum? I don't get it.

He's just asking for info on how to make a program work... not asking us for our info...

I'd definitely second looking at pdflib and searching for other form libraries. Keep in mind you'll also need to look at security and databasing needs as well. PHP has some excellent security features as well as database interfacing.

I haven't worked with PHP in a long while, but if I remember correctly, you can incorporate C, C++ and other programming languages into it to make your program more robust.

1. I meant FDF, but after looking at pdflib it may not be necessary.
2. I just did a quick google search for pdflib, good info...I think it can help.
3. Why silly? I'm trying to put something together to help this community. It is a public forum that has nothing to do with coding, I'd rather save everyone the extra reading material and try to maintain the integrity of the site. Hence private, so i can discuss the problem with someone willing to help me out offline.

BUBBA:

I think I can do this without a database. This way I don't have to store personal information and worry about it getting hacked. PDFlib is definitely a step in the right direction.

Thanks fellas.

I really don't see how you can do it without a database unless you plan on all of your applicants filling out and printing the paperwork in one sitting. The other issue is log-on. A long on script by definition is a database interface.

Since you don't plan on storing any info, what happend when an applicant can't finish the paperwork in one sitting?

Or is this something to just get it started? Like type the applicant's name and such into the form, print it out and then mail it to them?

That was the initial plan, but the more I read, the more I want to improve the process and I think a database will be necessary. Looks like I found my answer:

Now all I need is to convince some college kids to write the code for me for college credit.

That's the easy part: Design project for a software engineering project.

My junior project is being developed into a program to track precommissioning physicals at NNMC in Bethesda. That's actually how we ended up doing it.. a doc roped our class into it for our project.
