Just getting started and have lots of questions

Your chances are back to zero. Unless of course you can get your disapproving girlfriend to, well... back off. This is your life my friend. I had (HAD) a girlfriend a long time ago who didn't like the idea of me joining the Navy. She was (is?) a nutcase though so maybe that doesn't matter. Still, the point is, the opinion of anyone other than yourself about what you should do with your life is (in many cases) WORTHLESS!!!!

Grow a pair...seriously. Tell her to deal with it or cut her loose.
 
Shes being cut loose. Thats the point. I just don't want an uncomfortable living situation while I'm getting this done

Buddy, if your girl has a problem with you applying how is she going to feel when you're deployed?


Seriously though the close friends that I've encountered that don't like the fact that I'm in the Navy have a problem with it because they don't fully understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, take the time to explain and if she still won't have it...then you've got to make the choice that's best for you. If you have had this conversation with her and she still doesn't support it then she's dead weight...

Step #2 Concentrate on getting your commission, because it WILL consume you!

How far along in the application process are you? I ask because this can take a while... about 8 months in my case, and if you are walking on glass when it comes to talking about the Navy with her be advised that meeting with your recruiter doesn't 'calm down' throughout the process. I'm not trying to give relationship advice here, but if you're planning on canning the relationship right before (IF) you go to OCS you may want to rethink that. If I were in her shoes I would appreciate the decency of being told up front what was going on... you're just asking for a fireworks display when you do finally drop the bomb. Waiting may sound like a great idea but there are a thousand other things that you're going to want to worry about during the time before you head off (I'm swimming in it right now). Also, you better make sure that she thinks that the sit-ups, curl-ups, and running routines you all-of-a-sudden decide to start have everything to do with looking good and nothing to do with anything called the PRT.

In all seriousness -- this is a great forum and it is exciting to hear about people getting selected. The application process may seem like a bear, but everyone that has gone to OCS here has been in your shoes, and to your benefit have asked similar questions to yours. Search around and I assure you that you will find what you are looking for and so much more.
 
Changing community after designation

If an officer goes in for say SWO, can he later switch to something else? Is there a penalty for this?

If you enlist and then become an officer, do you get paid at the rate based on your years as an officer only, or do you enlisted years count towards this?

What if you were in the Marines or the Army? Do your years in one branch count towards another? Like retirement... if someone did 10 years army, and 10 Navy, would that work?
 
1. You can redesignate to another job in the Navy, but depending on what you are switching into you may find yourself behind your peers. Some communities have a fairly rigid timeline for the wickets you need to hit to keep yourself competitive for advancement.

2. You get paid based on total time in on active duty, so yes enlisted time will count for base pay as an officer.
