Just getting started and have lots of questions

I'm curious as to all the steps of the recruitment process for a civilian to become an officer. I am interested in intelligence or nuke, and would like to do this asap.

My primary concern is that I don't officially have my degree yet, as the school expects to be paid. Is it likely that they will pay my tuition in order to recruit me?

You should read the stickies on this forum, which will detail the various (or singular) commissioning sources available to you depending on where you are in your education.

NUPOC is a form of a Bacchelorate Degree Completion Program. They will not pay off your loans for you, but you will be paid as an E-6 from the time you swear in to the time you commission. You will also receive BAH for your hometown and enlisted BAS. You will also receive a $15,000 bonus (which comes to about $10.5k after taxes) upon signing up. You will have no military obligations while attending college other than to get > 3.0 average. The downside, similar to the pilot BDCP program, is that you will owe two years enlisted time as an undesignated seaman if you DOR from the program after receiving your pay.

I know nothing of the intel community other than it's extremely difficult to get into. If you are the ideal nuke candidate (strong engineering background), you are probably not an ideal intel candidate (strong history/poly sci background), and vice versa.

The Navy doesn't offer to "pay off loans" for officers. We make a lot more in base-pay than our enlisted counterparts for comparable time in service, and part of the higher pay comes the responsibility of taking care of your own bills.

I was told that you do not receive any pay, or you aren't really 'in the navy' until you finish OCS. Any truth to this?
 
That's why I asked. I have someone who is completely objected to me joining, trying to offer every potential reason not to. Including reasons which don't exist.
 
You get paid at e-5 or e-6 grade I forget which it is until you are commissioned as an officer. It says it in your service agreement.

You get paid as an E-5 unless you're nuke, in which case you get paid as an E-6. If you recruit someone into the nuke program, you get E-7 pay.
 
Odds of being picked up

I'm curious if there are any general statistics regarding the % of applicants that are accepted. I'm curious what the demand for officers is like presently.

I have a couple things that are concerning when I apply for my security clearance. Nothing severe, but several small things. I'm curious how this effects my odds of being chosen. I am studying for the ASTB, and know I will do good. I am extremely motivated to do this. Sorry if I keep asking stupid questions, but I'm trying to fill in all of the blanks I can. I was just reading on another post that there is a motivational letter, and letters of recomendation, and such? I was not aware of these requirements. Are there additional I should know about? What are the requirements of these papers, with regard to length and format? What else should I know?
 
If you don't apply the chance of being picked up is Zero.

And try the little search button as well.
 
I concur, why worry about what the "odds" are? First, nobody here can tell you because every package is different. Somebody might say only 20% make it (I made that number up), but you have no idea how good that batch of applications was.

Your likelihood of getting picked up shouldn't factor into your decision to apply. If you want it, apply. If you don't, then don't. It really is that simple. As for the motivational statement and LORs, have you talked to an officer recruiter yet? They will make sure you get everything in that you need.
 
All of your questions can be answered by a recruiter. There is no way you are going to get anywhere without a recruiter, so might as well get in touch with one just to get the ball rolling. Once you find one ask them what's on your mind and then use the forum to fill in the gaps.

In regards to your stats questions -- there is a thread titled "stats and scores" that may be helpful.

There is also a thread called something like "motivational statement megathread" that will help with getting that done. But, it is a max 400 words, at the end of your application, and must be written in English.

I'm not asking because I'm determining if I'm going to apply. I have already talked to a recruiter. It is being worked on. I just can't call my recruiter at will, because my disapproving girlfriend will flip out on me if she sees any calls logged to that number :icon_tong
