I've had that conversation many times. It usually ends like this for me:

"Have you ever heard of an aircraft carrier?"

"Yeah"

"Well... those planes and helicopters are the ones the Navy flies"

"Oh, I thought the Air Force landed on the Navy's ships."

That's not completely unreasonable considering how civilians do not talk about us and think about us on a daily basis. For the uneducated it's makes sense that all planes are the AIR FORCE and all ships are the NAVY, even though each branch has a bit of their own. If people ask, then I'll educate them, but if they're too dense to believe me then it's over.

I foresee another one of my famous thread-jacks turned thread-splits, but here's another common confusion between officer/enlisted career paths.

Them: "Ohh... you're going in the Navy??" (warily)

Me: "yeah"

Them: "Oh, well BE CAREFUL! My ex boyfriend went into the Navy, but his recruiter screwed him over! He was gonna be one of the guys on the big boat that the airplanes are on, but now he cooks"

Me: "Right.... well I'm going in as an officer and a pilot, so it's a bit different. I'm lucky that my recruiter even talked to me in the first place. It's a bit more competitive... And I have a contract that says I'm going to be a pilot if I'm accepted and nothing else."

Them: "Oh, well my ex is an officer too!"

Me: "No, your ex is a Petty Officer"

Them: "Right, an officer"

Me: *facepalm*

Them: "Just be careful"

Yep, spot-on, I hear that one all the time too.

"Yeah my friend was told he could fly too for the Marines, now he's on the ground in Iraq"

It's funny how the associate the entire military aviation community with the Air Force. I guess it makes sense from a civilians perspective but I just chuckle. The Navy was founded long before the Air Force along with Naval Aviation if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't it the Army Air Corps before the Air Force was officially founded in 1955.

The Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps from 1914-1918, the United State Army Air Service from 1918-1926, the US Army Air Corps from 1926-1941, the US Army Air Forces from 1941-1947 and the US Air Force from 1947 to present.

I visited Cornell a few times when I was a mid, and there was a display in their AFROTC spaces which said something about how in 1947, the Air Force "ended its 33-year-long association with the US Army." (emphasis mine) Umm . . . yeah . . .

Anyone else have difficulties explaining that you can fly even though you wear glasses? I get that one a lot.

18 September 1947

Yeah, I would not even bother mentioning that.....I think the thought of someone not having 20/20 in the cockpit boggles your average person's mind. That said, I didn't realize you AF pilot types could be < 20/20

^ Colonial Marines in Aliens with their crazy dropship version of the Osprey...

Officially known as the UD-4L Cheyenne.

Some dude wrote up a whole long NATOPS-style dissertation on the thing, including diagrams of the scramjets, a cross-section diagram of the fuselage (really detailed)...kinda impressive, in an uber-geek way.

No, it wasn't me.

TOP GUN 2: there's no way this will not violate the laws of God and man. I predict Thomas will back out, the rest of the cast will be C-List or below, and it will be a festival of suckitude. Possibly straight to DVD.

Since it would be a C-list movie...I have a good Idea who would be the hot shot chick pilot and her WSO (Since it probably would be F/A-18F)

Molly Ringwald- 80's superstar in her epic comeback. (Hotshot pilot)

Mario Van Peebles already sporting the new Navy issue aviators seen here on his way for audition. (WSO)

Ray Liotta would be the alternate if Mario Van Peebles demanded too much money because of the movies shoestring budget to fit in Tom Cruise's salary.

I heard that Molly can't because she's already been cast as the sailor carrying coffee, who gets run into by the guy who chewed out Viper and Jester spilling coffee on him and bringing up the line "G&$ D*$&#^#, THAT'S TWICE, I WANT SOME BUTTS!"

Haha, let's not forget...Mickey Rooney making a suprise appearance as Mav's old squadron CO.
