I would like some advice on digital cameras. First let me say, I know nothing about cameras or photography. I’d like a camera that’s simple to operate, yet a camera that takes good pictures without a lot of user input. :) I know nothing about photography. Basically, I’d like a simple camera to take photos of everyday stuff, and one that has the ability to load the pictures easily to my computer. So nothing fancy is required.

If you're looking for more simplicity then power then there are a million great cameras out there. I'm pretty sure I got my father this one from Sony. I knew he'd be thrilled with it so I didn't put much effort into picking it out. I saw 8.1 mega-pixels and the price (which the website says it $230 but I don't think I paid over $200 at Circuit City) and grabbed it. This is one piece of electronics where you can just walk into a store and pick one out and as long as you aren't blind to the other prices, you won't get ripped off and walk out of there with something that is really good.
I bought one for myself that had a few more bells and whistles and still only paid about $450 for 9mp, image stabilization, aperture and shutter control (which is more then what my old SLR could do). Nikon unfortunately stopped making it for some reason, but it is a fantastic camera.
But Sony, Nikon and Cannon make some great cameras and it's almost to the point where you can't go wrong. Just try to pick some style you like and get as many mega-pixels as price will let you and you'll be fine.
As for loading the pictures to your computer, I use Picassa from Google, which works with any camera and is super easy.

I bought a Casio exilim 6.0 megapixel digi-cam at Wal-mart last year and it's pretty much idiot proof to operate. I think I paid $120 for it and it takes pretty decent pics. All the ones that I've posted on this forum. Whatever brand you get, you will want to get a memory card for about $20..

I think anything more than 6-7 oz's and more than 4"x2"x0.5" is considered too big nowadays.....I know you and A4s are used to these bad boys.....

it should fit in your pocket...#1 consideration!
 
I'm a bit of a photog myself so let me see if I can help you out. Let's figure a couple things out first.

1. How much are you willing to spend?
2. It seems that you want a point and shoot digital camera?
3. If that's the case do you want a small thin camera that could easily fit in your pocket or does it not matter. This can affect price.
4. Do you prefer a brand?

I think that about sums up the basic questions.

Let me know. I'll do some research and get back to you with some solid options.

$175 8.1 MP Nikon S51 - I have this camera and it's a great little point and shoot.

All of these cameras are excellent options for you in my opinion. As for megapixels don't ever get caught up in that too much. Higher simply means that you'll be able to make larger prints with better clarity or you will be able to crop down a picture and still get the same quality. But many times you can become limited by your lens.
