Place to shoot in San Diego?

Anyone know of a good range in or near San Diego?

I prefer outdoor ranges, but anything will work. I haven't shot the 1911 since leaving Milton back in December... and the Liberal-ish Girlfriend has asked me to take her shooting... So, a good place to take a beginner and introduce her would be awesome!

I've done a google... but would appreciate personal experiences and viewpoints...

Take I-8 east over the mountains to Ocotillo, find a place in the desert, and blast away. Personally, I think its way more fun going white trash style than to a range.

I'm in California... enemy territory...

I half expected to have my gun, CCW, and testicles confiscated at the border when I PCS'd.

Were I still in WI, I'd have no problem finding a place to shoot... but I'd rather be 100% question free and legal out here in Liberalfornia. Plus, as I stated... I'm taking a skeptic shooting... one who showed interest on her own. I'd like it to be as "white-trash" free as possible... as reputable as possible.

Skeptics are more likely to embrace shooting if they are in a "controlled" and therefor more familiar environment. At least, that's my opinion.

Thanks for your input... I do appreciate the response. (totally sarcasm free)

Seriously, I spend a lot of time between Yuma and SD and shoot in the desert there all of the time. Out there, you really need not worry so much about the liberals but rather the occasional meth lab owner. You can have even more fun with a 4WD to compliment your shooting. PM me and I can give you better directions so you don't end up in the R-2510 or the park .

Glad to hear this is an option out there. "WT" style is how I was raised. I enjoy a range but who doesn't want to unload 15+ rds as fast as you can ever now and then? I don't buy 1000 rds to fire only 20 a day at the range :icon_smil

TB I might be contacting you too when I get out there if you don't mind to get some of these areas.

Back in the day we would drive out past Brown Field where Otay Mesa road ended and turned to dirt. Go another half mile or so into the hills. There'd be lots of folks back there on any given Saturday. Not much chance for shootin' stuff like this at the local range:

A CAR-15 and an Uzi.

If you're near Camp Pen, there are pistol, rifle, and skeet/trap ranges. All are outdoors and hella-cheap, and have pretty good hours. They also have a lot of experienced coaches that are fun to talk to.

What exactly are the firearm laws in Cali like? From what I've heard, pretty strict. In Tennessee, we carry. 21 and up and no felonies and you're in. A weekend course and a background check = carry all you want, concealed or not. The only exception is anywhere federal (schools, parks, any gov't building) and any establishment that serves alcohol on the premises. We have shotguns in our trucks, pistols on our hips and the deer hunting 308's in the safe. What's Cali like?

Cali is.....tough.

All handguns have to be registered. Mag capacity limited to 10 rounds. No assault weapons.

Orosco Ridge

If you want to go shoot legally in the National Forest like most people in normal states do, there are a few options in the San Diego area. The option closest to me was Orosco Ridge in the Cleveland National Forest. It is on the out skirts of Ramona but it is well worth it to be able to pull off a dirt road and shoot however you want. You need a California Adventure Pass to use Orosco Ridge and they cost $30 a year or $5 daily. I got a yearly pass from Sports Authority and it is a pretty good deal. They have a number you can call to see if it is open and to get a gate combo. Every time I have been there the gate has been open. If you do go make sure you clean up after yourself. This is one of the few good deals left and I would hate for idiots to get this range closed. The park rangers will drive by every now and then to make sure you have a pass on your vehicle. They are usually very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Once you get up there look for the yellow signs on the side of the road, there is one where you can start firing and then one a couple of miles later where you can't fire beyond that point of the road. There is room for plenty of people to go shoot so bring some friends.
Here is the link: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/cleveland/recreation/shooting/oroscoinfo.shtml

You can also pull up videos on You Tube of guys shooting the crap out of stuff if you search for Orosco Ridge. (this is not my video)

You can use google maps and have your destination be Orosco Ridge to make it easier to get there. I wouldn’t recommend taking a car, the road is pretty rough so a SUV or truck would be best.
