I also want to know how this could happen.
How the hell...? OK bear in mind that I know absolutely nothing about the prowler, but I don't get it.
Long story-short, piss tube got caught up in the canopy jettison mechanism.

Hmm. Not showing up in my NATOPS pdf. Searched for "relief tube," no joy.......I believe it was the pilot who was trying try and use it, tugged on it and blew the rear canopy off. It is an actual Caution, I will try and see if I can scan it.

Sigh......I found it, but it does not directly address the relief tube setting it off. It is on I-2-92 of the Block 89A/89/82 April 2002 edition:
Caution:
Actuation of the auxillary canopy system release handle or movement of the auxillary canopy system cable behind the pilot's ejection seat may result in actuation and subsequent loss of canopy in flight.
That kind of seems like a no brainer. I mean, is there something in NATOPS that warns, for example, that if you pull the ejection handle, you're going to eject?

You obviously have not read a NATOPS lately. There are plenty of "no-brainer" statements inside your average NATOPS.
Prowler has a low-tech piss tube (small funnel w/ tube that vents outside) at each seat, which incidentally, doubles as a sound-powered phone for FNGs who get a litle too big for their britches.

Dumb question, are they getting away from venturi tubes because of corrosion or something?![]()
It's just how Grumman tackled the problem when they designed the jet. I don't know what the Tomcat has, but I would be surprised if it didn't have a similar gadget.
