Naval Aviator's Coffee

On the Carl Vinson, they got a huge espresso machine in WR1. No kidding 5 feet long with brass domes and an eagle on top.

They did the same on the Stennis, too. Stennis one is similar to one below.

I swear no one ever slept on that ship...guys would be running down for a hit between briefing and manning up.

Our freakin' mess bills went up accordingly, too, to $250 month...got to pay for all that coffee somehow.

Skip the liquid. . . .many a dark and stormy night I was saved from certain death by the chocolate covered espresso bean! Nothing encourages rapid three-part power corrections like mixing the cocoa and coffee bean.:)

Those are also great for long road trips.....no need to pee!

A chocolate covered donut, a cigarette, and a cup of Navy Joe ... the Attack Pilot's Breakfast of Champions !!!

I was taught that a Naval Aviator's breakfast was a Coke, Smoke, and a Puke. Unless you were in the PI, then it was a Beer, Barf, and a Cigar.

Maybe you didn't "hang" w/ the right guys ....:)

We didn't do hangovers too often (a.k.a. barf/puke); we wanted to be able to hit the target. :)

"If you're gonna hoot w/ the owls, you've still gotta' be able to soar w/ the eagles ...." (old Attack proverb) :)

We were a Helo Det in the PI. Not much choice on who you get to hang with, but we "hung" together for sure ;)

Again, Helo Det in the PI. No targets to hit. Not even a pitching boat flight deck, just that big ol' Cubi runway. :)

In all seriousness, the hangovers were really only barely tolerated that morning after our first night in port. After that, it was all business. We had hours to put on the airframe after all. :D

Oooh, I don't know. There were a few times in Yuma when I could hardly find my rack.:D

I was always fine in the morning though. Wasn't it great being young?:D

It wasn't finding it that was the problem... it was staying in the spinning SOB.

worst of all...I saw a guy go around and collect all the half drank water bottles and use them to fill up the water tank. Nasty.

I just dry heaved a little there. yuck!

I remember one morning in the Viking corrosion shop. (My LPO to one of the airman) "Thanks to whoever made coffee, but who put sugar in the pot?" (airman to my LPO) "O that's just my coffee, it was getting cold so I put it back into the pot to warm it up." :D

If anyone here is DEPLOYED (and i mean, middle east, not middle of pacific) and would like to get some Kona Coffee, PM me. Someone I did not know hooked us up when we were in Iraq, I would like to return the favor. Kona has got to be better than the wardroom coffee...I stayed on the USS Monterey for a few night a couple years back...i can still taste the tar coffee!

Does Sigonella, Sicily count?

I'm still trying to figure out a way to steal our 200 pound espresso machine that the hangar came with. I think the next guys might notice all the severed water and drainage lines coming out of the wall though. The Italians do an OK cup of coffee, but I'd kill for either Tully's, Seattle's Best, or Starbucks right now. Between good beans and that espresso monster I could make millions (or maybe just several hundred) over here.

PM me your contact info and I will see if the Starbucks here will make a donation. They are pretty generous. If not, I will at least send you some you can stash away.

Our CO mounted a sign on the coffee maker that reads "Refill this pot or lose a kidney."

That has got to be about the most sacriligious thing I've heard.

...today.
