I seem to have a knack for saying the wrong thing

So, I am out on my way to dinner with my new boss tonight. He is an ex-marine pilot and we are swapping stories. At one point it comes up about past job assignments. I tell him how I really enjoyed being a rag instructor, but it was not my first choice. I relay about how I did not get my first choice because about a dozen folks applied, and I did not stand a chance getting it compared to the guy who ended up getting the job. I said how he was just a great guy and he was an admiral's son, etc.

Later that night we meet up with new boss' parents visiting from out of town. They are really friendly, nice folks. Turns out that the dad was an old A-7 pilot, spent time in lemoore, etc. Later on I ask how long he was in the Navy. 35 years. We were having a good time swapping sea stories. Anyway, he tells me to have my family come over some time and stay when we are passing through. He hands me the business card and the first thing I notice is REAR ADMIRAL, United...

How do you like me now, boss:eek:?

I was going through CDC to get my brief on the way to the bridge to take over OOD on TR when both our Captain (Steve Abbot) and the CAG (Fox Fallon) picked up their first star. The TAO told me about them both making it and I said "figures, after all they both have Admiral Dads". Adm. Fallon was in a shadow and overheard me. Chewed me a new ass and latter told Adm. Abbot. The next day when the Captain was on the bridge and I was again OOD, he says to me "I heard the CAG laid into you last night". I immediately started dancing and Adm. Abbot says "Don't worry about it, my Dad and Grandfather were both Admirals and I'm sure that didn't hurt my chances."

Admiral Abbot is by far the best commanding officer I ever served.

I knew the end of the story, at the first mention of "admiral's son"...

ouch, man...

It's no big deal. He knows his dad's an admiral. He knows it had to help him to some extent or another. He also knows that it doesn't necessarily say anything good or bad about his performance. That can make life harder for him, vice easier.

I had a MEU CO who's dad was the Commandant. Having served in his command, I have no doubt that he'll be a general some day. He should be. He's an outstanding officer and all around great American. Did he have access to great opportunities, partly because his dad was The Man? Probably. The key, though, is when it was time to put up or shut up.......he put up. Big time. That'll always be the key. I wonder if people who haven't served with him think that he'll keep moving up because of his dad. At the end of the day, he's probably had to be better because of that notion, rather than succeeding because of it.

I'm sure that your boss is smart enough to know that you meant no offense, and if he's the kind of guy that "puts up", you'll have no worries.

I think a lot of such legacies are there because their fathers raised them in a military, and a high performing, lifestyle.

I'm sure some doors get opened because of the legacy, but the son still has to walk through the door.

In some cases, I'm sure COs are less likely to crush a legacy knowing that he'd better have a damn good reason for it.

HD, was that CO named "Mundy," perchance?

Small world... I had the unfortunate opportunity to be with a couple of "legacies". 3 in fact. 2 out of 3 were great. One was my shipmate and his bloodline included some pioneers in the Nav and let's just say a whole class of submarines was named after his family. 2nd, same ship but he was the Sec Nav's son. I remember being in bars and catching him on the cellphone. "Dude, is that your Dad? We want to tell him a thing or two!" Then the guys would start spouting smack and he'd just laugh and wave us off. Then he'd come over when he was done and say, "My Dad told me to give him all your names... not. He says hi to everyone btw." Good guy.

The third, ugghhhh. He was the one that still leaves a bad taste in my mouth till this day. All I'll say is that an entire weapons systems bore his family name at one point...

At least you said he was a good guy. I wouldn't be offended...of course my dad wasn't an admiral, but an E-6 which I'm sure will take me places!:D

Incidentally, what was your first choice?

My first choice was the foreign exchange tour. I always wanted to do switzerland, spain or australia. The only one my timing worked for was spain, c'est la vie.
