Civilians and flight jackets.

If any A-4 driver from VA-164 off the Oriskany "lost" their jacket, I know where it is.

I take it that's the jacket du jour he's wearing... or is he a stand up guy and asking you to find the owner of one he's come across?

Eh, it's just a jacket. If he puts wings and patches on it and starts telling everyone to call him "Ice," then that's another story.

Re: the intel-O with his leather jacket...do you have the same issue with AIOs wearing flight suits? 'Cuz I've never seen one that didn't, and no one said peep about it. Usually went out of our way to make sure they got some issued when they checked in.

I was out and about with my Pops once when he saw some soccer-mom wearing a set of Navy wings as flair on her Wilson's Leather jacket (not a flight jacket, just a plain ol' civvie thing). Not a lapel pin or somesuch, mind, but a full-sized set of reg wings, and jacked at a 60-deg-or-so angle. He went up to her and asked where she'd got them (perhaps she had a hubby or crotchfruit in the service), and she twitted something about a garage sale. So he asked her, very nicely, to please not treat something that a lot of people worked very hard to earn as a piece of costume jewelry. She gave him the hairy eyeball, but she took them off.

Wow... now that's hardcore. I wasn't there and didn't see the full context of that situation, but I figure if a soccer mom thinks wings are "hot" and a cool accessory, so be it. I earned them and I'm secure in that. I also understand your Pop's point too and commend him on his actions.

Of course, I'm guilty of:

1. Letting my then fiancee (now wife) wear my spare G-1 while we were dating. An airline pilot once asked her if he made a "...good Navy landing" when she wore it during a flight.

2. Bought my kid the Korean, Texas street special fake green NOMEX jacket with pilot wings on it. He loves that thing...

I understand the guys fascination with collecting too. I have 2X Navy G-1, and 2X AF A-2s currently in my closet. That's not counting the Willis & Gieger I bought my Dad complete with leather nametag sporting Wings and "Dad" on it. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be here and I figured he deserved it since he missed his own chance due to prejudice and the times... No one ever said anything negative about it to him all the years he wore it at the DLA. In fact a lot of Naval Aviators used to come up to him and ask him, "...how's your son doing?" Or, "...that's great, I wish I did that for my Dad too".

Some of us can be on both sides of the fence...

Get over it....there a few worse offenses IMHO. Here's one that chaps my a$$:

1. Intel Officer (w/o wings) wearing a LEATHER FLIGHT jacket in uniform.

Back when we designated Air Intel Officers separately from surface Intel guys they were all issued leather jackets. Oh, and they wore brown shoes too. But back then brown shoes were reserved strictly for aviation officers (note it wasn't pilot/NFO).

But I think that's different still. Neither your wife nor your dad were someone unconnected with naval aviation. It's a different story with someone who bought the jacket because they liked it. If the guy is just weariing the jacket that's one thing, if he's telling stories and giving himself a callsign it's another. I tend to just feel sorry for that guy at the airshow that had to buy his jacket, only to ruin it with 9,000 patches and dumb questions

Great idea by the way with your dad. Mine actually earned is own jacket and wings but I know he'd love a set from tipsy gypsy with "Dad" on them.

Interesting....Never heard of that one. Thanks for the enlightenment. :icon_mi_6

Back in the early '70s, Air Intelligence Officers went through AOCS (that, I know for a fact) and the first part of VT-10 (fuzzy on this part) before they were split off and sent to Lowery AFB for training... I could be wrong about the VT-10 part ... I'm getting CRS pretty bad lately

Ummm, you seem pretty ate up with this whole Naval Aviator thing. Which car bearing a naval aviators wings license plate (plus matching rear window sticker), plus license plate frame with "Naval Aviation" and "Fly Navy" bumper sticker is yours? :D Did you buy your wife any Naval Aviator Wings jewelry...come on, tell the truth!

I guess your dad is lucky you aren't a lawyer, otherwise he would be carrying around a briefcase instead.:icon_tong

Is mb1k in the USAF? OK, just substitute "zoomie pilot" for "naval aviator" and "Fly Air Force" for "Fly Navy" in my previous post. If I go around editing my posts, then the terrorists will have won.;)

mb1k's got the USAF Wings plate I think..

Guilty.

:D Actually I have the Navy Wings on my front license plate... I hated those BTW. Let me explain, when I got stationed in Barksdale, Louisiana doesn't have front license plates. I was driving around for two years with an empty front license bracket. Another guy in HQ had Navy Wings on his front too when I mentioned, "...I'd almost consider that instead of having that gaping hole". About a week later there was a plate with Navy Wings on my desk! Why fight it? Besides, it drove my commanding officer crazy that I was sporting Navy Wings instead of USAF ones. And they were free.

I lose them in April when my Louisiana plates expire and I switch over to Texas...

My only sticker(s) are "Ducati Performance" because I got sick of short-penis'd guys who don't even own bikes slapping "Harley Davidson" Eagles and logos on their trucks, SUVs, and Toyota Prius'... ;)

The Willis & Geiger was $75 at TJ Max... wooo-hoo. Score!
