Where to buy MREs

I'd like to update our emergency kit and replace the random energy bars and canned goods we currently have with MREs. I guess I don't need the real military MREs--anything like that will do as long as they have a long shelf life. Anyone know where I can buy them?

I remember seeing some at the commissary in Pensacola. I think they were about $10 a pop. Some Army/Navy surplus type stores or camping/outdoors stores may have them as well.

Zowkes! For $10, we will live off of Power Bars and canned beans instead when the big one hits.

I'd rather buy a .99 can of chef boyardee...with the same amount of cals.

I would suggest that you go find the closest Army unit to you, active or reserve, and tell them the next time that they go to the field that you'ed be willing to buy a case or two of beer for any extra MRE's that they bring back. From personal experience you don't really start eating the MRE's until all the engery bars that you squirled away are gone. You might also see if they have any Tpacks. Those are canned foods more like what you find in a regular grocery store, expect that rather than being shaped like a regualr can they are rectangular and contain enough chow for 6-8. They are much better than anything in an MRE, so they might be harder to come by.

What is this google thing of which you speak?

I did google, but learned that many of them are not the military brand. That's okay with me, but I'd like to know what I am getting. Also, there are so many places that sell them that price comparing was taking forever so I was hoping someone could recommend a place.

I guess this means I'll have to buy tickets to the gunshow. ;)

I agree and disagree with GroundPounder on this one. I agree that you should try and get them from your local neighborhood Army or Marine base. I DON'T suggest that you get them to swap what's "left over" from a field exercise. You'll end up with the crappiest MRE's known to man, as that's what's always "left over."

My only question is what is with all the Navy hate towards MREs? After being in an Infantry Battalion, and seeing the changes they've made to MREs - I can honestly say they aren't as bad as they were. Gone are the days of Ham Slice and Dehydrated Beef Patties (even the 4 fingers of death are gone). We now have black bean burritos, spicy penne pasta, dairyshake mixes, etc... And luckily, beef stew is still around!

I rather like modern MRE's. Mind you i'd not want to eat them often, but they're great for an emergency kit. MRE's are more portable than a bunch of canned goods, so if you need a mobile kit (say in hurricane prone places or earthquake prone places) they're about the best there is - though remember to pack lots of water.

Another option would be dehydrated camp food, such as that sold by REI. This stuff is actually pretty darn good, especially after an epic hike where the last 1.5 miles climb 1500' (it sucked, a lot). But you'll usually need a stove and pan to heat water in. They aren't cheap though.

I think, dollar per calorie, you get a good deal on MRE's. It might, however, be healthier to go with a less convenient option or those REI camping meals.

This thread reminded me that I need to update MY emergency kit. I do live in about the most earth quake prone place on earth.
