Personally, I don't think they ever "left" the game -- just took a time out.

I gotta dig out some old slides and see if I can get them to digital -- at least put 'em on the wall and take a picture of them. You guys would probably like to see 'em ....

I've got a couple that I took while we were X-Pac'in --- just north of GUAM after we'd been in "Bear Country" for a couple of days -- one of 'em has Crazy Ivan coming right over the ship (or mebbe a couple 1000' abeam) but definitely less than 2000' -- more like 1000' -- with a couple of VF-213 BLACKLION's taggin' him all the way.

I've also got a couple of up-close-and-personals w/ a Rooskie Badger in the same stack. Gotta' dig 'em out.

I recall a Chinese submarine shadowing the Kitty Hawk last year with almost no response whatsoever, beyond Adm. William Fallon's statement that we need better relations with China. Similarly, I take it these 'Bear airshows' are more a source of entertainment than they are provocation. Beyond tailing and 'escorting' the bombers (with no verbal or physical communication), is there anything else done in response? What happened to telling countries that any act of provocation would be matched equally or any attack would be met with full retaliation?
 
Overflying the boat in international waters/airspace isn't an act of provocation. They are well within their rights operating due regard.
 
Bear/Badger/May over-flights, high and low altitude over the carrier were pretty routine back in the Cold War day.
In fact, we looked forward to them. ;)

Forgive my question, but how is overflying at 2,000ft operating with due regard for a warship? Would this be a plausible justification if a Super Hornet buzzed a North Korean destroyer? I'll accept the consequences of any ass kickings that come from my questions.
 
I agree with Single Seat. I don't think flying @ 2000 feet can be compared to a jet "buzzing" a NK destroyer. Different politics, different flying.

No doubt the overflight was intended, but it was in international water and airspace. If the USN thought the ship was in peril, it would have defended itself.

Buzzing, and over flight are two different things. A Super Hornet over flying a NK destroyer, depending on how you do it, is totally acceptable. Don't ask for any further details please. (Or ask and S-3 guy)

2000 feet isn't exactly buzzing the ship. Granted, if there was a recovery underway, they blew right through the marshal stack, and caused a near-midair, that might be different.

Heck, the FAA minimums for VFR flight are 1000ft above the highest obstacle within a 2000ft radius in built up areas, or 500 feet in sparsely populated areas. Not that that applies in international waters, but you get the idea.

How's this for due regard???

@ 400 KIAS+ overhead this KASHIN ("Cash it in") and I'll let YOU guesstimate the altitude -- I can't/won't remember. Check out the #1 SA-N-3 launcher "trackin' me" .... the Straight Flush radar was lighting up my RAW gear like a Christmas tree .... but at least the forward 76mm mount couldn't track me ..... :D

Or course ... had this been .... "real" .... one of us would have killed the other way before the shutter on my PENTAX clicked ... I'm pretty sure I would have walked away based on superior skill and cunning .... :)
