HM8406 in Training
Well I was on here last about 10 months ago looking into the STA-21 program, etc. I have since been to boot camp, corps school, worked PSI at NAMI Physical Exams for a few months and am now just starting at the AVT school here in Pensacola to be a HM8406, after here I am heading to Field Med(8404) school and then off to Hawaii with a HMH squadron of some sort. And plan on working on getting a 09 STA-21 package in if I can get enough time in before the spring cut off next year. I also plan on taking out a student loan to knock out my PPL while i'm in Hawaii, thats more of a personal want than a need, but I heard that you can't class up for API until you've got one anyway, so better now than later. Any advice is more than welcome.

You heard wrong. There is not requirement for a ppl. You need to do IFS which is 25 hours under instruction and that is waiverable if you have your ppl. You dont need to have a ppl though.
 
ah ok, well I was going to get my PPL regardless so doesn't really matter, thanks for clearing that up. :) Whats an IFS?
 
It's when the Navy pays for you to go to a civilian school and get 25 hours in a 172 or similiar plane. If I were you I'd save the cake and let Big Blue pay for that shit.

yah but I want to fly, and I don't want to have to wait atleast 4 years to finish school, commissioning, etc to fly. Plus i'm gonna be in Hawaii for awhile, so I want to be able to fly while i'm out there, go from island to island, etc.
 
I got my PPL while I was in high school. For me it was insurance- if I didn't get picked up to fly for the Navy I wanted to at least fly something as an (expensive) hobby. Plus, if I didn't enjoy flying I would know about it before applying for an active commission. IFS does not give you a pilot's license. Having my civilian license is something I've never regretted. If you have the means and you want it, go for it.
 
@MCDGexx - keep up the hard work, you'll need to be a top performer to get picked up for STA-21. Take a look at the recent STA-21 selectee's who have posted their records.

Thanks, I know its gonna be hard, but it'll be worth it. Being a corpsman is awesome, but flying is definitely my dream. I've been in Pensacola for over 2 months now and everytime I see one of them flying over I get all jealous and shit.
 
I too am working on my 09 STA-21, pilot option as well as my private pilots license. I have heard people tell me I'm wasting my money with the ppl and have had people tell me it's a smart thing to do. I agree with sevenhelmet on this one. If you want to get your ppl then do it. Don't get it only to help you get picked up. Good luck with everything, I wish you the best. Hopefully we will be at NSI together this time next year.

hopefully, i've gotta see if I can get any kind of recommendation out of this school, that would help ALOT, but i'll be working directly with flight surgeons, etc, so that'll help alot once I get outta here. What is your Rate and time in service?
 
I am an E-5, Air Traffic Controller stationed at NAS Patuxent River, MD. I have been in for 4 1/2 years.

You probably won't have any problem with LOR's especially since you are working at the clinic with all the doctors (officers). I would suggest trying to find an aviator as well to write you one up. The higher the rank the better it looks. This is just my opinion. This is my first year applying so I too am new at this process.

You got me beat by 2 paygrades and 3 years and a half :(. I'll be working at a squadron actually, so i'll have plenty of pilots for LORs :)

Be careful about taking out loans on flight training. It can be pretty pricey...I did my training here in HI and although the scenery can't be better the cost is astronomical. I'd really think twice b4 you take out any loans. I almost got stuck with a really crappy loan that AOPA was endorsing (I thought it was foolproof if they were advertising it). They wanted 24%. Unfortunately there are not a ton of options for financing flight training. If however you are really set on doing it like I was I would recommend enrolling in a part 141 school and use your G.I. bill. Especially if you plan on staying in. You can always use your tuition assistance for college and if you get selected for STA-21 then you've got it made as well. Plus you can't use it in STA-21 anyway.

I thought I can't access my GI Bill in like my first enlistment or something like that.
