WW2 NAVY Spitfires

If firepower is what you want, I'd go after the P-61 black widow.

The B-25J was no slouch either.

My DAD got hold of one ... I'll have to see if I can find the picture and post it.
He is definitely one lucky man. I wish I had the opportunity just to see one in person. One absolutely beautiful a/c, and a great killer a/c too.

The USN flirted with the idea of a P-39 variant called the XFL-1 Airabonita..which would have been armed with the 37mm firing throught the prop hub, but was canceled in lieu of the Corsair.

The Kfirs were just here at Jax a few weeks ago with some contract Hunters too. Great planes...

Aircraft available on a weekly average basis during the Battle of Britain
Hurricane: 674
Spitfire: 394

Kills during the Battle of Britain:
Hurricane: 656
Spitfire: 529

The article basically says the Hurricane.....had a better combat record than the Spitfire.

Don't these two stats contradict the conclusion? Or am I missing something?

Hurricane kills / acft avail = .97 kills per A/C
Spitfire kills / acft avail = 1.34 kills per A/C

But what aircraft were they going after?
I'd take the Hurricane knocking out a JU 88 over a Spit downing a ME 109.

How about:

Hurricane kills / Hurricanes lost = 656/317 = 2.07
Spitfire kills / Spitfires lost = 529/497 = 1.06

So the Brits traded 1 for 1 with Spitfires but got a 2-fer with the Hurricane.

You can bend the numbers many ways.....
