40% of F-15, now grounded, never to return to fleet

No, but it is clever how the FIRST answer is order more F-22 rather than look at any other options. I also realize there are life expectancy issues with the F-15s that are affected, but I am sure there is a fix out there that is less than 200 million a jet.

The line about how some things you can't put a price on is a little amusing. Is that line of thinking only true for the Air Force? Because I am pretty damn sure the average Navy/Marine Corp tactical aircraft is in worse condition than the average Air Force tactical aircraft. Perhaps we could dip into this pot of money a little to update some of our fleet. We do protect the country and all....and there are some things you just can't put a price on...

So no, I don't think the whole thing is a hoax or anything like that. But I do think the AF is VERY quick to use this as an opportunity to get some more F-22s. And spend a LOT of money.

^^^I definitely see where you are coming from, with the F-22 being so high priced. However, I think they are looking at it this way: Since the flaw isn't just with one piece per aircraft, and the fix would pretty much be a complete overhaul and very expensive, why not just replace the aircraft now and put the money towards the aircraft that would be replacing it in the future anyway? Which I see where they are coming from. What other option do you see, other than doing the overhail on all of these already aging F-15 airframes?

I try to keep out of the specualtion business, but I imagine there will be tons of armchair quarterbacks talking about getting '16s out of mothballs or biting the bullet and making the repairs on the Eagles. I don't wish to really dig into the nitty gritty there. I'm sure there are better experts on that subject on this board than me.

If we need those jets for the fight tomorrow, building F-22s might have some issues. It isn't like they can magically going to roll a hundred+ of those things off the assembly line in the next few months. They would need to seriously beef up the supply chain (for a lot of pieces) to meet that huge overflow demand. So we will still be lacking assets for a long time, but now we will spend more money. Saying you need those F-22s is one thing. Saying they are the ONLY option is politicing. And saying, "You can't put a price on..." is tugging at the ol' heart strings. The AF is very good at lobbying for money. I will give them that, for sure. And make no mistake, when they start talking about why they need expensive programs (and using soundbites like that) it is lobbying. I'm certainly not faulting the General. His job is at least partially to help procure those funds. He is doing that.

However-ever-ever, all the while, this huge increase of spending for the F-22 is going to come from somewhere. And it ain't welfare, it ain't the congressional salaries...it might be from the same pool that NAVAIR is hoping to get a slice of.

You guys are acting like it's a done deal. If you actually paid attention to the story, it's CNN who is speculating (use of the word "may") that the remaining 40% are going to be permanently grounded. The General interviewed said that "some" of them won't return to service and that's not going to be his call, or even a decision that is made anytime soon.

Well I would think that the decision would have to come sooner than later considering 40% of the F-15 fleet is down right now. We'll see.
