Military Relying More on Drones

Interesting read:

I guess. Doesn't really seem all that surprising because of the reconnaissance tool they provide to guys on the ground. I am a little surprised they include flight hours for the Ravens. They always struck me as more of a really good RC aircraft with a camera that could be some immediate eyes in the sky for a company. I wouldn't think you'd need to track flight hours for something that takes off by being thrown into the air.

I would presume they would use the flight hours to propogate continuing the programs. Anyone want to discuss moral issues with "unmanning the front lines" and the effects that may have?

The "Morality" of using a tool in combat that saves your own combatant's lives and helps insure your success in that conflict? 'Bout the same as the "Morality" of calling in an airstrike or launching a terminally guided artillery shell or missle. Just a use of a technology to give yourself the edge that the other side might not have. If they do have it, rest assured it will be used against you.

I agree with your Art Of War mentality, and its great for us, but man it would suck to be on the other side. I was more or less kidding but there are some issues to ponder. One such is how making killing less personal can have implications on our judgment. Another would be how a rift is developing between the technologically advanced societies, and their ability to wage war, and the not so advanced.

And God bless that rift. I want to be able to rain death on my country's enemies with impunity. I don't want Akmed to even think he can get away with throwing a rock, much less firing a weapon at an American. I want every country and organization to know that they have NO CHANCE at even getting close enough to harm an American before the wrath of God is visited upon them. Most of all, I get a warm fuzzy by thinking about how the bad guys always have to be nervous, because they don't know when they're being watched, and they don't know whether a Hellfire is going to come through the window of their limo in the next second.

Agreed. Just because I can individually stab enemy combatants in the face with a soldering iron, it's much more prudent and advantageous to use technology to achieve the same effect. Plus it keeps us from having to revisit the whole "legality of using Christopher Walken as a weapon" issue again...
