Proper breathing during push ups?

I've heard you're supposed to breath in on the way down and out on the way up, but breathing mid-push up makes me feel weak, like I'm going to collapse. I have to be holding my breath. Anyone else have this issue?

You might want to consider breathing in during the exertion phase of any exercise.....it gives your chest wall more rigidity, and a bit more stability and strength.

Instead of letting it all out at once (hah!), try blowing it out under pressure (whhhh!) as you're going up. That seems to keep your chest puffed on the way up so you feel more leverage, plus it helps you absorb oxygen better.

I like to pretend I'm a steam engine. Woo-woooo!

If you try breathing like you do when you lift weights, you'll hyperventilate if you do pushups with significant speed. When I do the PRT, I don't think about it. I don't count, I don't time my breathing. I just breathe and push until the whistle blows or my partner says stop. If I need more air, I breathe faster. Think less, do more.

Same goes with running. I love watching people time their breaths to their steps. I just don't get it. Your body knows what it wants, don't try to outsmart it.

Thats my approach as well I just ignore the spotter and push them out, I probably breathe every 5-10 pushups, usually push out 100-115...feel lightheaded and ready to hit the ground at the end, but objective was achieved.

Or you can use this:

As has been said, just breath naturally as your body demands. No special requirements for breathing with push ups.

Squats and heavy bench pressing etc are a different story. IMHO.
