Source for Academy Time not counting towards retirement

Don't hate. I know guys who did BDCP for enough time to technically get O-1E pay.. (3 years, and got hurt bad at OCS).. I think he is getting O-3E pay..

And BDCPers ARE under UCMJ 24/7. You are enlisted active duty as far as legal proceedings are concerned.

I enjoy my year of pay seniority and only having to really do 18-1/2 on active duty to retire. :D

Wow! Never wish away somebody else's good deal.

I'm sorry you academy types don't get that. Fwiw. Those 4 years should count for something.

But, just to set the record straight, ROTC types can get sent enlisted just like academy. It happened to a Stanford guy at my unit. A "superstar" midshipman who partied a little too hard, had a bad semester along with some integrity issues. Guess who was on his way to great lakes NTC.

I thought ROTC guys sign the line after Freshman year only if they're scholarship.

That's true, but I'm comparing apples to apples. Who cares if a non-scholarship guy doesn't have a commitment, he might not even make it to commissioning.

If that chaps your butt, just consider the pay down the long run being O1 over 3, O2 over 4, O3 over 6...oh yes, also the 60 days I had of leave when I commissioned, pulling BAH and BAS while in college AND OCS, being entitled to driving from OCS to home and home to Pensacola after commissioning...should I continue? Maybe this should be a thread under BDCP.

Say What?!

How does reserve status work? I eventually came into the military in OCT 2004 as an enlisted reservists. Was activated for a short time in 2007 before receiving my commision. When I finish OCS in February should I be receiving 0-1 or 0-1 over three?

If you leave active duty and go to the reserves, then go back on active duty, the only reserve time you get credit for is the time you were on AT/ADT. Drills don't count. So basically you might get a few weeks unless, but not enough to get O-1/3

However, somethings did count in the "old days." I work with a guy who is '89 USNA and is retiring in '08 as his one year at NAPS counted. He'll have 19 years as an officer and his one year at NAPS.

NAPS still counts... 11.5 months to be more exact. Graduated USNA/Commissioned May '05, currently O-2 over 3, go over 4 in the middle of June.

It does seem odd that academy guys get the shaft on 4 years.

Speak for yourself. I went back to the Yard a few months before I left for Africa...eight years away wasn't enough. Flashbacks, freaked out. PBSSD (Post Boat School Stress Disorder).

I agree, do it again in a second. It just annoys me that we have active duty ID cards and are subject to UCMJ but the 4 years don't count for anything. I really think it should at least count for prior enlisted. In my eyes there is absolutely no incentive for a prior to go to the Academy over say MECEP. At MECEP you make full pay with BAH, can get promoted, and all 4 years counts toward pay and retirement. At the Academy you get the measely stipend and nothing counts. Am I missing something here?

Yeah, I think you are. While I've always enjoyed the quote "a $200k education shoved up your ass a nickel at a time", the fact remains that we get a great education at a great price. (So I get that high-end engineering degree, and in return I have to go to flight school!!???).

And OBTW, you are now linked into one of the best old-boys networks in existence when you are ready for a real job. Not a bad deal, all things considered. And as far as the 4 years not counting - whether before or after 20+ years of service: we knew that going in.

[As a side note not directed at anybody in particular - don't wank about other peoples' good deals. Nobody is taking anything away from me to credit a NAPSter with an extra year of service so I can't really see myself bitching about them getting it.]

I've gotta admit that the time counting towards retirement was one factor that I took into account when my Chief suggested I apply. We were all under the impression that it would count down the road.

For comparison, I was looking at STA at the same time as I applied to USNA. Hindsight being what it is, I'm glad I went to USNA. That said, I'm pretty confident that had I known then about the time not counting, I probably would've made a different choice.

You're right about the networking though. That is one major plus about Annapolis.
