DITY Move

I don't have a car, so I think I am just going to U-Haul it down to Pensacola.

It's going to cost over $1,000 so I want to make sure I get paid back. I'm OK with paying for it now. I can't figure out this process of the DITY move on my own, so is it possible for me to just get down there and have them help me with all the paperwork at PSD and pay for the whole move?

Thanks guys.

Read the recent threads on people DITY moving down to Pensacola. Not sure what the current info is, but a lot of guys without follow-on orders are "getting screwed" I believe. And by "getting screwed", I mean not knowing the rules and incompetent PSD people letting them make mistakes.

I believe it's something to do with them TDY'ing you to Pensacola, then if you get Corpus for primary, them paying for the DITY move there. So you might not want to shell out $1000 that you might not get back.

I highly recommend you get to your personal property office. If you do it all by yourself without authorization before hand you will not get paid back. You don't get compensated for everything either. I believe its 95% of what it would have cost the navy to move you. If you are not attached to a command call your local bases office and they should be able to tell you where to go to get the "DITY brief" it will save you a headache on the other end trust me.

Thanks guys.

I called the personal property office in Newport, RI (just graduated OCS there). They said I will have to bring all receipts with me to Pensacola and write a brief memo explaining why it was not done at OCS. They said it will get paid for after that. Should I be skeptical of this?

The system they had at OCS was unorganized as hell, so there are plenty of us who are going without this paperwork done properly. The new OCS still has a lot of kinks they are working out.

And you're right, I'm looking at a pamphlet right now that says prior authorization is required. Would I have to go all the way back to Newport to handle this, or could any Navy base do it?

Check Penske truck rental BEFORE you book with U(get screwed)-Haul.

Much better company, much better equipment and they were 50% cheaper on my DITY from Corpus to Jax. They also offer free reservation changes and guaranteed equipment. Little known fact, but Uhaul can (and will) substitute equipment on you with no notice or recourse. You could book a 15 foot truck and end up getting a 22...and paying all the extra.

Every penny you save is a penny in your pocket.

Ron will fall into the category of not getting screw because he's BDCP.

I know its not the same but it is similar. I left the academy on a DITY and they told me "don't worry about it save your receipts and you'll be fine they'll hook you up on the other end". I almost didn't get paid a few times over, but thanks to the awesome lady in the personal property office in p-cola i ended up getting paid six months later. It is rather frustrating dealing with the personal property office out of a commissioning source because it seems like they dont care if they screw you out of your money, "its not their problem".
Either way, if you are doing it yourself, make sure you get an empty weight and a full weight of your trucks. Save all of your receipts, gas lodging yadda yadda. You don't get paid back for this it just helps them figure out how much taxes you have already paid. They pay you a computed rate so gas is not directly compensated but you end up making up for it in the end. Gnats ass it, and stay organized and you should be ok.
Hope this helps.
