I recommend San Diego. All of the above to include football with BETTER weather and it's all year round. Also, Vegas is about a 5 hour drive away. Good luck!

Crime's not that bad, schools aren't bad, but aren't great.

You can say this when Groton, CT is on his list?!? Groton is the armpit of the Navy. The only thing to do on the weekend is leave Groton. I remember when Dad was Supship up there... There's a reason it's called "Rotten Groton."

Charleston is awesome by the way.

I've never been at Groton, and for the critics of my review of Norfolk. I was only there for two weeks on TD with no transportation. But I didn't think it was that great.

That hardly qualifies you to "review" Norfolk area then. Sounds like you didn't make the effort to even see what was going on. I've been in countless ports with no transportation, but that didn't stop me from getting away from the ship.

Concur. Norfolk is pretty sweet... There's plenty to do, and some other pretty sweet places are a short drive...

We all realize that. But here, when you answer a question, you are usually expected to know something about that which you are speaking.

"Armpit of the Navy?" I'm not the biggest Norfolk fan around (VA Beach is MUCH nicer!) but that is pretty scathing. Someone who is new here might take what you say for gospel. "Live by the gouge, die by the gouge."

Another hint: No officer or sailor I have ever had any respect for has ever used the term "With respect" or "With all due respect." That is used by idiots and people who write Movies and TV scripts. You are going to be an officer, if you believe something, say it and stand behind it. If it is disrespectful but still important to say, find a better way to say it so you don't have to qualify it. To express an well informed opinion that is different from your seniors or from the mainstream or from orders given is never disrespectful, if done properly, and is actually part of your job description...

First of all you have to be "nomadic" to be a sailor. You better be ready to go wherever the Navy needs you.

I have 26 years in and have managed to do back to back tours at a location once. Other than that I have been in every corner of the country and stationed overseas as well. That is what to me is a HUGE benefit of being in the service. You get to see other parts of the country and the world. duh.

And while other places may be "better" than others, I would not have changed anything, I'm happy I got to move around and go where the Navy needed me. I always made the best of it, no matter where I was.

So you have to ask yourself, "is it the job I'm looking for, or the location"? if location is more important to you, you might LUCK UP and get what you want with the Navy? Otherwise, don't join, we don't want to hear you whining about not being where you want to be, that sounds pretty selfish.
