calling all fixed wing marine pilots

Gentlemen,

I'm currently on PTAD awaiting TBS and assisting the OSO out of
Covington, KY. I have a candidate who asked me to put him in contact
with a fixed wing pilot. Anyone who could give me a name, number, and
time available to speak please send me a private message or respond to
this post. Thanks.

certainly bro. when I first began flight school 2 years ago I had my mind set on jets. I busted my ass and now I fly single seaters (harriers). the previous entry is correct--most pilots do fly helos. they probably lead happier and more "normal" lives then we do, but I wouldn't trade this sh#t for anything in the world.

So that your candidate can ask him what percent get jets? Send the kid here and tell him to get reading.

Not to discount anything you've accomplished up until this point, BUT...

You're talking out of your ass.

First, you say that you "fly single seaters (harriers)." Yet your profile says that you're in Meridian flying the T-45C. That's not a Harrier.

Second, just because you're in intermediate/advanced doesn't mean you'll make it to the fleet as a Harrier pilot. And if you do make it to the fleet as a Harrier pilot, it doesn't mean you'll stay a Harrier pilot. I've got a buddy that is an Intel officer now. Note to future Harrier pilots - don't try to taxi with the nozzles full forward.

Third, your narrow view on the world can't possibly lead you to determine how "normal" or "happy" our lives are in the rotary wing community. Once Harrier/F-18 bubbas return home, they're home doing whatever training it is they do. Helo guys come home, and do their training but then - Oh shit, there's a Hurricane. I didn't see many Harriers flying in support of Katrina, but I saw a shitload of Phrogs/Shitters. That's on top of their normal training, and oh-by-the-way - not flying from their home duty station.

My point was that the young man in question needs to realize that no matter what, it's a very real possibility that he's going to fly helos if he joins the gun club. Even if he's dead set on jets. Ask the guys that selected with me out of Primary - no jet slots that week. 4 guys selected, all had jet grades - all got helos. Good for me and my buddy, since it was my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice and it was his 3rd (Space Shuttle and SR-71 were his first two). Not as good for the other two guys.

Im not sure why all the angst. If a F/W type wants to help the guy out PM your info to him if not no big deal. This 2ndLt is clearly trying to help out a guy who is trying to learn about Marine Air. I am confident that a F/W guy who talks to him will cover all the Marine first Aviator second 70% Helos etc.
Ease up a bit boys.

Dude, I take offense to this. Didn't you see me in that Greenday/U2 video?

Let me preface my remarks with something many of you already know. I'm not an officer yet, and I have zero experience in naval aviation.

That being said, going into all of this my attitude is such: My preferance is fixed wing, but it is only that... a preferance. I'll be happy as long as I'm a Marine Officer and a Marine Pilot. end of statement. I think its important to have this mindset given the environment in the Corps. As many of you have said, its a team sport, one in which being a pilot is only half your job. That and it seems that every helo guy I talk to says the same thing: WE LOVE OUR JOB. The only thing that matters is that MARINES is stenciled on the side of the aircraft.

Jesus, I don't see why everyone feels the need to preach to a 2nd Lt who's simply trying to do his job. Mcbride, talk to Capt. He'll put you in touch w/Maj Moore, who answers Marine air questions for candidates in 4MCD.

IMO we're trying to help him do his job... I think a candidate with a more well-rounded mindset coming into the program is going to be one thing.... A better candidate. just my opinion.

I'm with SkidKid....
I don't get it at all.

If he said he wanted to talk to an 0302 I doubt people would be all over this guy. Or what if he wanted to talk to a Helo pilot? I know that would be totally cool with me and I wouldn't feel the need to tell everyone that there is a chance he might have grades above the cutoff and be "stuck" flying jets or whatever. Why WOULDN'T you want to talk to some one who has the job you aspire to have?

And besides, I heard by December of 2016 Harriers are only going to be used for VERTREP anyway. So there's that.

I started this dogpile, and it's not what I meant.

My point was as a Naval Aviator, I'll talk to him about anything he wants to ask. If he has fixed-wing specific questions that I can't answer, I'll hand him off to a buddy. I think by just putting him in touch with a fixed wing pilot ($20 says this soon-to-be candidate would be let down if they put him in touch with a C-130 guy) OR a rotary wing pilot is stupid because at this point he has to: a. finish OCS, b. finish TBS, c. survive the NAMI-Whammy, d. survive API & Primary with Jet grades and have jet slots available, blah, blah, blah... Yes, he has a right to have his questions answered, but I think at this point in his life he could have the caliber of his questions answered by ANY Naval Aviator...
