Accelerated Training

I hear that Primary has an accelerated program option for those students who qualify.

Does anybody know:

1) What those qualifications are?
and
2)What the advantages and disadvantages of this program are?

Thanks a lot.

The only "accelerated" syllabus I've heard of was maybe for NFO to pilot retreads that already had many hours and quite a bit more air sense than the average shmo stud.

There is accelerated for pilots. I would not do it unless you have some serious IFR time under your belt.

And by that, I mean Comm/IFR with at least 100 in the goo in a terminal type environment.

I remember it fairly sketchily. The hour requirement was fairly low, like 50ish, and it allowed skipping a few FAMS, a few BIs, and a few RIs. It really didn't speed one up THAT much, and entailed a little risk--if you didn't pick up the Navy way, vice the civilian way, you could set yourself up for a fall.

Is it true that you are graded on an accelerated scale if you already have a certain amount of # or tickets?

There is no accelerated grading scale.

It can help by reducing the total number of graded items. It can hurt by getting you less flights where MIF is lower. It used to eliminate your "freebie" flights.

This was debated thoroughly not too long ago. Search is your friend on this one.

I went through VT-3 two years ago and I did the accelerated program. I would say yes, go for it. It helps out one's overall score. I skipped 4 contact rides, a few instrument sims and maybe two intsrument flights. If they ever feel like you're not ready to continue at an accelerated pace, they'll just make you take the rest of the flights for whatever block of training you're in with no penalty.

It's not really a program in and of itself. It's more of a, "Hey, I've got prior flight time. Here's my log books." If you do very well on the first flight of each block, they move you through to the last flight of the block. They can only accelerate you through Contact and RI's.

This was my experience at VT-3. It may vary per squadron. Good luck

Right now I have Comm/IFR Multi but not even remotely close to that much actual time. Lots of sim though. Do you recommend it anyway?

I also like everybody else want to be at the top of my class...will this help at all? I have heard mixed replies to that question.

Alright guys...look. You don't ask for the accelerated program. It is given to you if you meet the prerequisites and they decide to accelerate you. Period.

It will lower your total number of flights and cause you to do multiple flights per day more often, especially in contacts. The advantage is not to you, its for the squadron. (speeding up production)

As far as trying to be top or your class...stop worrying about it. Take one flight at a time, do the best you can every day. The end. Gaming the system will not make you fly better.

I wouldn't recommend doing it, keep your mouth closed and get all the flying time you can, that's my opinion.

I didn't accelerate, though I had a substantial amount starting Primary, and still finished #1 amongst Navy/Marines finishing the week I finished.

On a lighter note, somebody put some wings under my name!

Don't fool yourself into believing if you are accelerated you will have an edge on grades. It isn't that simple. Yes, you will have fewer graded items, but that doesn't mean much. LOTS of people have fewer graded items and still end up with a low ranking.

Fewer graded items means less items to make up for that bad day when you get a '2' or net 1 below.

So is it fairly recent that having less graded items doesn't really affect your grades that much? It has been a while of course, but I was under the impression that every point counts in that regard. I skipped 2 hops in flight school and had a pretty good NSS. Would I have had a good NSS without skipping the flights? Of course. But if it had mattered between 1 and 2 points higher, wouldn't it be worth it?

All of that part of my discussion is caveated with the notion that the kid is accelerated for a reason, and not just to save the number of "x's" that must be flown for Operation's sake.

I picked my nose on Friday and later that day a cute girl talked to me. The two weren't really related.

What Scoober said. You don't have a say in it. When he asks, let your onwing know about your prior time. He'll tuck that away when you do Fam 1. If you smoke Fam 1, maybe bring it up. Personally, I'm w/ FLY_USMC, I'd take all the flight time you can get, but what do I know...

I'm not following you here. I just meant that if skipping a couple flights improves your NSS, what's the problem with it?
