New Pensacola Fitness Center

Anyone else really, really disappointed? $15 mil, 60,000 square feet, and just about the same type/amount of shit that was at the old gym. Looks like about 1/3 of the space is being used for weights/equipment, and the rest is for show. The lobby is actually the same size as the weight room. There is also a "Unit PT room" that is massive and usually unoccupied.

I'll admit, my expectations were high, but this new gym is a severe disapointment, and all the fitness staff agree....all those who I have asked told me "they didn't ask us." I've never seen such an absurd waste of space in my life.

Thoughts?

See your problem is you are thinking about the military in the sense of a business, i.e. that the infastructure and facilities are in place to make people happy and satisfy their needs so that they will spend money there or renew memberships and tell all their friends to do the same thing...If you look at it that way you will drive yourself into a hole in the fetal position rocking back and forth while sucking your thumb.

I hear you there, and I'll also admit that planning the equipment and layout of a new gym must be a logistics nightmare. Somehow, NAB Little Creek has a gym that is adequate and suitable for everyone from a marathon runner to a competitive bodybuilder....I was really hoping for something along those lines.

Ill agree the layout is interesting at best, but what is worse is that every other song was something by Fergie the last time I was in there.

I thought that her music was a staple at all gyms. Nothing gets me fired up for some lifting like hearing about her humps...

Thoughts??? Thoughts??? Ohhhh, you boys. :)

The new Pensacola "fitness center": probably nice weights, modern hi-tech gear, lobbies (?), music, why .... I bet it even has
air conditioning and post WW2 showers/heads .... yes??? :)

The "old" Pensacola gym -- a hangar down on the quay near where the carrier tied up ..... the bicycles and volleyball net (below) were less than 5 years old ... that I know ... and when we needed air conditioning -- we opened the hangar doors .... :)

I would take a good old fashioned man weight room...no flashiness....any day of the week over the piece of crap they built on base. If anyone knows an appropriate venue to complain to...feel free to post...but the new gym is crap. The "weight" portion is horrible and entire place is a waste of space....what a dissapointment I agree. No pullup bar? 2 bench presses? 2 bars? what the F@@K? Who is the idiot who designed this place?

Most MWR/MCCS activities have a "How Are We Doing"-type comment box. If things are not to your liking, you should take the steps necessary to initiate change. Ensure that the powers that be know what you want in a facility. It sounds like the "bones" of the place are set, and unlikely to change. However, the equipment, layout, classes, etc. are always subject to change, but nothing will be done if those in charge do not know the patrons' likes and dislikes.

If things are really that bad (I don't know anything about the place; construction had just started when I left), you could take the five-minute drive up to Corry to use their facility. Or, if it is really that unbearable, you could always pony up a few hundred dollars for a private gym membership.

(Just be sure to lace up your Chucks like they did in the "old" days.)

And for some strange reason, I can faintly hear Kenny Loggins music when I look at this picture.

Funny. I was hearing Edison's original phonograph recording of "mary had a little lamb"..

I think that was new when those pics were taken.

The kingsville gym gets so horribly crowded. Yesterday, there were eight (!) other people in there. I almost couldnt bear it.

The new Gym reminds me so much of the YMCAs in Orlando. The weight room is not set up for athletes and bodybuilders, the setup seems to suit the dependents and those who just want to stay in shape.
The API gym is pretty damn good. When there isnt a class in there you never wait for anything and there is triple of everything. The sound system also kicks ass and you can play your own stuff. At the new gym I heard Vanessa Carlton, horrible music for a gym.
