Corpus or Whiting????

Can't speak to Corpus but as far as Whiting goes...
-Milton itself sucks. There's not a lot to do here, you'll be driving to Pensacola for everything.
-A large % of the students are married/have kids/etc.
-The base itself is in dismal shape.
-You have a better chance of getting through primary faster here though (word on the street is Corpus is something like 4,000 Xs behind).
I have to study now, I'm sure others will pile on with more info. If you're bored in API, take an hour and drive up here to get the lay of the land. Or just watch COPS.

I went to Corpus and loved every bit of the 8 (almost 9) mos I was there.
If for some sick reason you want to stress out and push through primary in as little as 5 mos, go to Whiting.
If you want to live on Padre Island, 10 minutes to base and 15 minutes to downtown and have free time to actually enjoy yourself while in primary - go to Corpus. The people are friendly, you escape Redneckville and San Antonio is only 2 hours away (Austin is 3 hours away). San Antonio and Austin are both great for weekend trips; you can tube down the river and hang out on the Riverwalk in San Antonio (lots of great restaurants and bars) or 6th St. in Austin (lots of great bars, music, culture, and ladies from University of Texas).
I don't think either place will determine what you select out of primary - so don't choose one over the other for that reason. Some people didn't want to move an extra time (given the greater chance you have of selecting helos), but in my opinion it was worth any little hassle that might occur with another move. Having trained at both locations, I'd take Corpus again any day over Whiting.

Save yourself the trouble and go to Vance. Much better place.
What makes you say this? Other than Langley Road itself (can we not repave a well traveled road?), things are in relatively good shape, it's just a very small base. Yes, there's lots of construction, but I wouldn't say that makes it in "dismal shape."
Very true. But how about this to blow your mind: Go to Corpus and you might actually do some of Primary here, too. Who knew?

-The place just has an ugly, abandoned feel about it. The first time I came up here on a weekend I thought I had slipped into the twilight zone or one of those Apple II nuclear test sites. NASP just feels much nicer.
-They finally started painting those eyesore water towers. What a fantastic way to open the morning looking at that pile of rust.
-There's an ongoing problem with bugs in nearly every building I've been in. (Maybe that's a Florida/Alabama problem in general?)
Its hard to quantify a lot of it without sounding like a d!ck. There's no good solution that doesn't involve spending money the Navy doesn't have.I guess I'll shutup.

Also... and this is probably going to get flames galore... why the fvck can the Pensacola/Milton area not seem to get over Hurricane Ivan. That was THREE YEARS AGO and I still hear people saying that "oh it was trashed during Ivan".
Kingsvillle and Corpus are not gems of bases either, but that shouldnt matter in your decision. I went to corpus and I am very happy i did. I hate rednecks with a passion, especially those bred in NW Florida. The locals here in Corpus are pretty friendly (as previously mentioned) and they like to party. Lots of good mexican food is around with some other assorted fare. The BBQ shack on base is amazing, my favorite bbq by far. There are a bunch of pretty decent bars along with your usual pilots hang outs. The beach isnt pretty but you can drive on it and find a nice spot to set up a bon fire. If you are an avid golfer, might want to stay in Pcola. There is only one decent course (north shore country club) in the corpus area. Especially since you are interested in C-130s, put down corpus. The navy, but not necessarily the Marine Corps, has in the past selected people to maritime or rotary based solely on where they went to primary to save on the moves.
In my opinion, come on down and enjoy Texas. There is a lot of good times here in Corpus and within a 3.5 hr radius you have Houston, Austin, and San Antonio.

Fair enough. The water towers have been being worked on for at least a year now, so it's been in work for a while. I think the abandoned feel to it is just because it's so small. PMRF in Kauai is similar, small and not very populated, it's just nicer to look at because of the scenery.
As for the bugs....ahh, yes. I just was introduced to that in medical a few weeks ago. Very weird, as they're not in the flight areas I frequent. You've got me there.
And Ivan? Yeah, it was a freaking disaster, that's why it's taking so long. Look at Miami after Andrew or Charleston after...whatever that storm was. Hurricanes are a no-shitter.
I just asked the question because it's a matter of perspective. The base is small but fairly well kept for having a Hurricane come through and more and more students getting sent here, it just isn't in a location that many of us would like, so it seems more ghetto than it could be.
I was a Vance guy so the only advice I can really give with confidence is don't go to Vance. That said, talking to my buddies who went to both Corpus and Whiting, the ones who went to Corpus seemed to enjoy their time more.
It'd be hard to back that up short of seeing everyone's selection card, their grades, and where they ended up. That being said that was the 'rumor' i was hearing around selection time. Other than 2nd hand stories of X many people putting Y as their first choice and getting Z because they wouldn't require a PCS move (corpus-props/whiting-helos)...it's probably just another SNA myth.
Although, when you see the base advertising the thousands of dollars they're saving by bumping up the thermostat 8 degrees and turning off lights...it could make you wonder.
BUT back to the original topic....i hold to the belief it's what you make of it. They each have they're ups and downs (i've never been to corpus so maybe i can't back that up), but i had a good time in Pensacola. (Whiting for primary and advanced). If you can't have fun where your at, that sucks for you. :icon_zbee
