Can Marines get their bubble?

I don't think that every school that a Marine attends has to be necessarily 100% related to his job field.

SCUBA or Jump for an admin bubba (I've seen lots of admin guys w/ lead sleds too) is a little ridiculous, but someone mentioned small arms weapons courses and things of that nature, those are, IMO, just like MCMAP - a force multiplier.

You can send a few guys to learn more weapons tactics or MCMAP (or whatever), and they can bring those skill sets back to their unit.

After all, the Marines of CPAC probably aren't going to man the front lines anytime soon, but even still: Every Marine is a Rifleman.

In some ways, it is similar to the concept of WTI, IMO.

I like this conversation a whole lot, but when you start throwing out WHY THIS, and WHY THAT, and I start throwing out WHY THE F%$K DO ACADEMY GRADS HAVE JUMP WINGS and they don't even HAVE an MOS, and I start winning the battle.......I don't want your tears getting on my boots.

Who in the blue hell would consider SERE as a "reward?" Yeesh . . .

Maybe that's why they arranged it...careful what you wish for. When I went, I was fairly senior after transferring over from USMC, but was saved from being numero uno by an intel officer who was an 0-4. Not sure if he wanted it or CAG decided he needed for some reason.

About the easiest way I've seen people get anything (jump wings/air assault/dive/etc) is to do it as a Mid. Plus, the guys I know who did those schools called/asked around and found a class with an open slot and then lined up no-cost orders from the Navy.

Otherwise, I think it's about impossible to get one of those schools unless you're job needs it. The Navy just doesn't want to pay for it.

How do you get SCUBA qualified as a Mid, mostly luck?

For the guys I know, it's a combination of luck and timing (isn't everything?). At the Academy there were always a few spots that were available for guys to compete for, i.e., there were usually about 20 spots at jump school every summer. I also knew a few guys who set the stuff up on their own (air assault, scuba, etc) and got into it that way, but those were much harder to come by.

Some of the Zoomies from the AFA did their 2/C cruise equivalent with us -- USMC indoc @ Coronado & Pendleton ... they were very unhappy about it .... :)

I got my Jump Wings @ Benning one summer in addition to the required NROTC cruise -- just something I wanted to do to "prove something" to myself --- it was quite common to see 3-4 guys come back each year with the Basic Parachutist Badge (wings), having acquired them during the summer evolutions ... even though the Army was very busy with the Vietnam surge and few MIDN managed to schedule it.

I had a slot for dive school when I was at the academy until they canceled dive school for youngsters... There were a couple meetings and then we did a PST that was run by the upperclass that had already gone to dive school. There were about 120 people that showed up to the meeting and maybe 80-90 that actually showed up to the PST. Out of those I think there were about 20 slots to compete for. About the same deal for jump school. I can't remember ever seeing a firstie select SEALs at the academy that wasn't wearing jump wings over a dive bubble, and we had 4 in my company... It seemed to come with the territory if you wanted to be competitive, but if you're already certified through PADI or NAUI or whatever why would you want to go to dive school as an aviator? Its gonna be pretty much the same thing as the civie course, just add daily beatings...

Obviously a man that has never stepped through the doors at NDSTC. Are you out of your mind?

Scuba school is for bitches anyway. If you aint deep sea, you aint 5hit. Period. Only Sub guys go to scuba school so they can do 10 foot hull inspection dives on the boat. A while back there were a few people that went through to do that mammal research project, but most of the guys I know that did that were deep sea. I have never seen any Marine go through scuba school, only through MCD. Not saying it hasn't been done, but why? There is one/two classes a year that middies go through, what a waste that is.
To clarify from above, all deep sea grads used to do underwater welding. Not just Sea Bees. Now deep sea school is an A school so who knows how they run it...
