The one without a cover in Cat's first pic looks so, down and disappointed.
Story to go with that?
Maybe he just was told he was back in "hack" for losing his brand new baseball cap for the squadron photo (and I think most were only worn once, just for that photo).

Subject uncovered officer (“Buck-snort” or “Snort” for short) was a great RIO . . . but it seemed he was often involved in some minor skirmish with either the CO or XO. He provided great entertainment on a long cruise.

.....Oh yea, I'm the only intelligent and good looking one in the photo. Easy to spot. :D ...
You could never get all of us together long enough for a picture such as yours. Too many drunks and ne'er-do-wells in the squadron.

Who are the beard-O's ... your A/I's ???

The picture was taken just out of port from Cubi to the line…so no flying, and of course, missing movement would have been a big bad, so we were all there. (Although some had to be "propped-up" for the photo-shoot, and some may even have used "cardboard facsimile cutouts" of themselves as "stand-ins" for themselves, while they slept it off in their racks  ).

No, the full beards were all aircrew. (Our AI was too young to grow a beard!) The ones with full beards are 2 RIO's, and one pilot. (The one RIO was unfortunately killed some years later in an F-14 flat spin; the other bearded RIO now runs his own software company, and wrote a book (Tail-End Charlie) about that cruise; and the bearded pilot is now a retired airline pilot.)

Amazing. One of our A/I's had to get special dispensation from CAG and the ship's CO just to get an A-6 "look-see" ride off the ship as he was sporting a full, Zumwalt-approved beard ....

It may just have been a matter of timing, since all our airwing aircrew beards were ordered to be shaved off a month or so after that photo.

But our airwing and especially our squadron did seem to have a wide leeway in many things we did.

For instance, we all had lip-mics permanently attached to our helmets to use when we wanted the O2 mask off. It was great for leisurely boring holes during BarCap (if you stayed relatively low and pressurized, of course). Then later in mid-cruise, some bozo actually took a cat shot using the lip-mic with his mask dangling….and was witnessed from the flag bridge. Next day, all our lip-mics were removed. :(

Also known as the duty "Spy" and a neverending source of amusement in most Ready Rooms
Our Spy delivered his briefings with a distinct, foreign accent. His callsign? - "NOFORN," naturally.

Ditto ... witness: one "Rebel without a Cause" sporting boom/lip mic. The shiny thingy on the chest of sample Pilot resembles a "regular" O2 mask fitting, too ... I even heard some people took traps while wearing boom/lip mics ... and did NOT get reamed .... but I cannot comment further ..... :)

Also note "new" 'stache which appears to be coming in nicely above upper lip.

And ... if I'm not mistaken ... I think I see a little flash of yellow flight deck jersey turtleneck peeking out under the LPA collar .... just maybe. ;)
