While I deplore the political scheming that resulted in the need to come up with this sense of Senate/House resolution, the notion that it sends some kind of new signal to al Qaeda is a little naive. Our enemies are well aware of the unpopular nature of the Iraq war, and have been for some time. They don't need to see a non-binding resolution to tell them that the majority of the congress and the American people are against the war. Give them a little more credit than that.

There is a difference between a war that is unpopular with Joe Sixpack on the street and a war that Congress has voted to lose (withdraw).

Other than that though it is mindless politicking on both sides.

I usually with Ralph Peters point of view, and some of his Books are pretty good.

The "nonbinding resolution" telling the world that we intend to surrender to terrorism and abandon Iraq may be the most disgraceful congressional action since the Democratic Party united to defend slavery.

Zing!!

Meaningless polemics - on both sides of the aisle. It adds to my love/hate relationship with politics.

It isn't that hard to argue that our current representatives in Congress (both parties) seem to lack even a basic understanding of history in general and warfare in particular.

Having said that, to argue that either side genuinely believes that they can personally benefit from deliberately sabotaging our national security policies requires a level of paranoia that I just don't have.

I thought Joe Sixpack voted out a lot of Republicans mainly because of the war, but that is just me......;)

Submitted for your approval:

Iraq Survey

The statistics are somewhat conflicting, generally:

People don't seem to approve of the way the war is being ran - but they don't want us to lose either.

Here are a few:

* 57% believe “The Iraq War is a key part of the global war on terrorism.”

* 57% “support finishing the job in Iraq, that is, keeping the troops there until the Iraqi government can maintain control and provide security for its people.

* 50% want our troops should stay and “do whatever it takes to restore order until the Iraqis can govern and provide security to their country” while only 17% favor immediate withdrawal

* 56% believe “Even if they have concerns about his war policies, Americans should stand behind the President in Iraq because we are at war.”

* 53% believe “The Democrats are going too far, too fast in pressing the President to withdraw the troops from Iraq.”

It isn't all roses and smiles - but I don't think Joe Sixpack wants us to just flat out quit...
