Just got a P229 in 9mm. I heard it's relatively easy to change to .40 or .357. Do I just have to change the barrel? Do I need a different mag too?

It can take the 15 round P226 mag too, right? Didn't want to buy without double checking.

Don't know about P229 in 9mm .... but don't count on it. Mags, slide size, etc ... mostly "different".

BUT ... as with "most" modern Euro-trash modular pistols ... .40/.357 interchange is a piece of cake ... same mags, same slides, readily available drop in bbls, blah, blah, blah ...

It's possible, like what's in the link that scoob gave. The change between 9mm and .40 should just involve the different barrel and a different magazine (assuming a .40 mag would fit).

Be careful with going to .357. I'm not familiar with the recoil spring on the 229, but if you're shooting a stock 9mm I can pretty much guarantee it won't be able to handle the pressures associated with a .357, and maybe not even the .40.

My opinion is you'd be better served to get either the .40 or .357 (go with .357) and then downsize it to the 9mm. That way the spring will still handle it, and you'll actually have less recoil using the stiffer spring. Plus, all you'd need to do is swap barrels to go between .40 and .357, the brass is the same diameter at the primer end so you can use the same mags as well.

Not likely. Guns like the H&K USP have differnt milling and weight specs for the slide between the 9mm and .40 even though they are built on the same frame.

.40S&W and .357Sig are pretty much interchangable, just drop in a differnt barrel. Reliability may not be as high with the modded caliber but if your gonna carry this for defence you should be buying a straight away .357 anyway.

*sigh* ... they just never listen to the ol' LT, do they ... :)???

^^ Like I said ... with a drop in bbl -- check BarSto ... Walther P99, XD .40, H&K .40 P2000 and Compact ... all VERY compatible ... no malfunctions, runs or errors ... just lots of "hits".

If you bought the P229 as a 9mm, you will NEVER be able to convert it. The slide on the P229 9mm is different than the ones for the .40 and .357. You can go from the big bore to a smaller one, but not the other way around. This goes for all the Sig pistols.

Snake,

You were probably thinking of the Sig P228 (.40 cal)... This weapon can be kitted to convert to a .357. As far as I know theres no way to convert a 229 to either of these calibers. Too late to take it back?

No, but I preferred the 9mm P229 over the 40 when I tried both. Not a big deal if I can't switch, but I did want to ask the question

too bad the P228 is ONLY a 9mm.

You can only switch a .40 and .357 around. I've got the P226 in .40 and plan on buying the .357 barrel for it, that was one of the reasons I bought it. The magazine for the .40 takes both types of rounds.

To answer your question, the difference between the .40 and the 9mm is that the .40 has a beefier slide than the 9mm. If you had the .40 then you can purchase an aftermarket 9mm barrel and 9mm mags, but the 9mm slide will not support a .40 or a .357sig. Also, you can't just change the slide out to a beefier slide either, I don't think it will fit the frame. I had asked these questions when I purchased my P226. I hope this helps.

I'm not going to read every post and instead answer your question.

The 9mm P226 is NOT compatible with .40 or 357sig barrels. The slide/frame is not strong enough to support the pressures. The only swappability (new word) is available in the .40 or 357sig version. Those you can swap barrels. You can NOT do it in the 9mm version.

Yes, 15 round mags will work just fine and highly recommended as 10 rounds in a pistol designed for 15 is just retarded.
