Hey all,
I am trying to find out somethings about helmet cams and video cams in general. I've looked into products by www.viosport.com. I have heard that some cameras experience interference when in the groove from the carrier radar. Anyone know of a camera that does quality video and does not have a static problem? Also, anyone know of a better helmet/universal mount camera or is viosport where its at? I appreciate the advice.

Most video cameras are affected to some extent by the carrier's radars, although the older analog models were particularly bad. It's not just while in the groove, but anywhere topside on the boat.

FWIW, flying by any AEGIS ship (CG, DDG) will mess with most non-hardened electronics inside 5 miles.
 
Wrap it in aluminum foil (or similar)...helps to some extent...basic RF shielding.

The interference is a Bzzzzzt sound with every sweep of the ship's radar antenna and possibly quick white static/snow in the image. In the island, digital cameras (mine included) have been known to simply shut down on their own due to the intense RF environment.

Are you talking about helmets that have carmera attachments and mounts etc... If so check out some of the following skydiving sites for helmets used by some of the camera guys who video jumps.

I hear there's a 3710 waiver to wear skydiving helmets in lieu of your flight helmet as long as it's for a really b!tchin' photo-op.

I learned the hard way and brought a hand held GPS to the boat....fried the antenna. Amazing amount of energy to be pelted with daily.

Go to Helmetcam.com....no sh*&! Best helmet cam in the biz. My squadron put together one of the best (if not THE best) helmet cam videos of OIF using these puppies exclusively.

My personal one, purchased from helmetcamera.com.

At that time they only offered one camera model, so choosing was easy. I think it has 420 lines and a 3.7 mm lens. Used a digital-8 camcorder to record.

Best way to get audio inflight was to snake a little microphone into the ear cup of your helmet, the camera hears what you hear. Much easier than building an inline adapter. However, in a 5-song cruise video we ended using about 12 seconds of actual cockpit comms. (1 ball call and a couple FAC calls)
 
The camera in the JHMCS rocks. Great quality and its digital as well. Just remember that if you are using a piddle pack for that long flight, you may want to turn the helmet off for a bit, as the camera records what your looking at :eek: .
