In-flight rearming?

Don't see it happening without a complete redesign of the racks and munitions in the inventory ... a TOTAL redesign. Even then, it's probably just an engineer's wet-dream for the foreseeable future. It's hard enough to inflight refuel ... so how are you gonna' put a MK-anything in the hooks and then attach the fuzing cables --- all the while trying to stay positioned in the jetwash from your C-17 "flying magazine" ???

MULTIPLE EJECTOR RACK
MER - A secondary bomb rack with six (6) individual ejectors of the 1000 pound class (6,000 lbs. capacity for stores of weapons per rack). Designed for single station release or release at all six (6) stations in automatic ripple mode. Rocket or CBU selection incorporated. The MER is carried by any primary 30" Hook Spacing bomb rack such as the MAU 12, MAU 40, BRU 10, BRU 11, and BRU 32. Pyrotechnic Operated Release.

The comments are amusing though . . . "What about a Vertical lift C-130?" Umm . . . right.

Isn't the whole reason for having red shirts load ordinance on jets because it's still too delicate of a process for machines? At least that's what I've always heard. If machines aren't doing it on the flight deck, I don't see it happening in the air... but then again this is probably a Chair force initiative.

This is just a hunch, maybe I was seeing things but I coulda sworn that the A-7 type had a in flight re-arming system back in the day...no?

It's far from a delicate process - in fact it's quite rough. If you've ever watched a loading team, you know what I'm talking about. It's not as though the stuff is going to go off from handling it. Everything these days is done with electric tail fuzing and there aren't even any percussion elements like in the old school M904 nose fuzing configurations. I don't know if in-flight rearming is workable, or even a good idea, but it wouldn't be because of any handling concerns.

No. ooops, sorry, Brett .... almost stepped on your line.

Remember ... there's alway some engineer somewhere who is trying to come up with a better mousetrap ... and they usually forget to include the cheese.

By the way ... the name of the Israeli company coming up with this particular proposal for inflight rearming is .... FAR Technologies.

That's .... FART .... :)

No. Just the opposite. Ordies, in my experience, have never been noted for "delicacy" ... ours used to use broomhandles to muscle the Mk80-series iron bombs up onto the racks.

Please note redshirts performing "delicate" arming evolution ... :)

Oh buddy. I was waxing nostalgic about our old school ordnance as I composed my last post. MK 82, MK 15 snakeye, M904 w/ M9 brass arming wires rigged every which-a-way. Ordnance of love, made complete with grease pencil salutations for the recipients.

I found that article on a car forum. It's funny reading all of those guys comments about it.

"it's a great idea, it would keep us 10 steps ahead of the enemy"

"A pilot couldn't do it, but a computer could. A computer could detect a 90mph wind gust and correct for it before the pilot even knew what was going on"
