Kingsville or Meridian

Ah the age old question. The age ole answer...it depends.

Both locations have their pros and con's. It really depends on you. What activities do you like? If you like hunting, maybe south Texas is best...you like boating, lake life, Meridian might be your choice...blah blah you get the point. Do some research, look at the culture, because one might be a shock for you while other may not.

As for the towns...having lived in both, they both are not the metropolis type, so don't get your hopes up. Meridian has more green color while Texas is brown most of the time. Both places are hot and humid as hell in summer time. K-rock does on average, have better weather and less cancelled hops do to weather. As for personal life, it is really what you like. Corpus is 40 minute drive (and yes you have to live in K-rock). You have to drive further in Meridian to get to places (P-Cola 2.5 hours etc). It is easier to get a commercial airline out of Corpus then Meridian...have to drive to Jackson which is about 90 minute drive...something to think about for leave.

K-rock now has "C" models, and is now training students in "C" models so that is also an option. The squadron manning is smaller in K-rock then Meridian. That itself has it's pro's and con's and depending on who you talk to, each has their own opinion.

As for the rumor of attrition rate...that comes in cycles and has nothing to do with the location...rather the student themselves. Sometimes K-rock is higher, sometimes Meridian is higher, so don't base your decision based on that. It's a numbers game and it fluctuates. The time to train is less in K-rock. Due to weather and smaller classes and manning. So you won't have to spend too much time there if that is of concern. You may want to take your time...side bar if you want...but you really have no control over that. Sim instructors are sim instructors. Everyone has horror stories and some have had great experiences with the so called bad sim instructors. It is student dependent.

As for “A” students being better/worse than “C” students…that is up for debate. Personally I think you learn the basic piloting skills better in an “A” than the “C”. As for the F18 Rags seeing a difference, they do, I’m not going to say what it is because I don’t want to base your decision on that but it’s not what you think.

Your career path is in your hands. You can make or break yourself. I personally would not worry too much about which location is better and try to game it that way. Go where you will be happier. The program alone is stressful, and making a rash decision on which location will only make it more stressful. Both places have great spouses club, use them if it applies.

That is not necessarily true.

Yes it is... or did the Navy suddenly decide to replace all their strike a/c with EA-6Bs?

ps- It's not difficult to make the steam gauge to glass cockpit transition.

Absolutely concur. Absolutely. Positively.

What has EVER been the problem with that transition, anyway... ???

You are either a pilot and you fly the equipment you are currently dealt ... or you're not and you don't.

You should feel lucky to get either one. Worry about what's ahead, like API or Primary first. Also, don't let anyone tell you that you'll better prepared for a Hornet or Super Hornet FRS just cause you had some MFD's to play with in Advanced. I'm an Alpha guy myself and the transition was a Cake Walk.

Good advice ...

But don't worry, be happy. Study to the best of your already proven abilities and learn become one with the airplane --- again, do everything to the best of your budding, nascent "young skull full of cottage cheese" abilities ...

..... you're ALMOST in the "SHOW" ... :)

mindset...

I am over in Kingsville right now, just starting phase II. After visiting both bases, I'd have to say Meridian has us beat on base quality. It's obviously a bigger base with some nicer things going for it.... ahh the GREEN golf course! (not the burnt brown grass of south texas!) :D

As far as attrition rates, and I assume both places have the same mindset, it seems the staff will bend over backwards to keep you in the program. People have made it through here with 5 downs through both phases; obviously not something to shoot for, but an indication of how much they want you here.

I have noticed that one of the keys to success here, and i am sure at Meridian is Attitude. Those people that struggled and made it through here had a great attitude, were positive, and stayed motivated to finish. One of them let me read his remarks on his 'board' results after downs, and those were the key adjective descriptors... pretty important.

For all you guys in Meridian or Kingsville, I would like to select jets and I was wondering if you could comment on the positives and negatives of both locations... I know a lot of other studs out there at the end of Primary are probably asking the same question. Thanks.

If you're going to steal my line, at least give me credit for it. And I think the only reason no one hear takes offense to me saying it is because I was Deep Sea for 6 years of my Navy career. Are you an ex Navy Diver? (SCUBA school doesnt count, BTW!)

Except that it's not really "your" line, as I've seen it used in plenty of other places besides our little microcosm of AW.

That's why I asked if he was a diver, kinda a well known slogan for the salvage teams.

Judging on my next door neighbor who wanted KVille and got Meridian...you aren't going to have much of a choice if there's not a slot availible at one or the other.

Just do your best and I'll see you in south park. Just kiddin'. Just don't fvck it up.
