I'm moving from FL to TX in a few weeks but I'm not currently a resident of either. Is either state better to become a resident? I know there are no state taxes for either but is there anything else to consider?

I was in the same boat and became a FL resident. The only real difference for you that I know of it in drivers liscenses. In FL if you are active duty and away from the state you have to send in and get an extension card to go with your liscense. In TX by virtue of being AD military your liscense never expires, so you jsut show mil id with liscense for the rest of your time in (very nice during deployments etc when mailing in a card or calling for an extension isnt always easy.)

That's news to me on the "never expires" part of the license, but TX also has online license renewal. I just hop online, pay with a credit card, and my new license shows up in the mail a week or so later. Same with vehicle registration.

That's exactly what I do for my FL lic and tags. I think the driver's lic lasts for 5 or 6 years, so it's not exactly a huge hassle.

Ditto. It's always fun to see someone look at a Hawaii address on a Florida licence, especially the locals. "Wait, you got uh Hah'wa'hee address..." How observant.

Florida does have an annual intangible tax on assets above $250,000 of $.50 per thousand dollars of value which Texas does not.

Didn't even have to fill anything out for my FL licesnse extension. Just called the state office in Tallahassee, they took my info, sent me a card, and as long as I'm not stationed in FL I never have to pay for a renewal.

From the website:

I'm in the military stationed outside of Florida and my license/ID Card is about to expire, do I need to renew?

Yes. You can apply online by using the GoRenew, if your citizenship has been established on your driving record.

- Or -

You can request an extension of your license by writing:

Bureau of Records
2900 Apalachee Parkway, MS 92
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0575

Requests can also be processed by calling (850) 922-9000 or by e-mail. You will receive an extension card that will keep your Class E license valid until 90 days after your discharge from military service. Please keep the card with your license and present it with your military ID. The card is free of charge and available to all active duty members of the armed forces and their dependents (spouses, children, and step-children under 21 living in the same household).

The extension card is only available to military personnel who are stationed outside Florida and have a license which expired after July 1, 1995. If your license expired prior to July 1, 1995, you may request renewal forms to be mailed to you. As part of the "motor-voter" process you can complete an on-line voter registration application for an initial registration in your county of residence or make changes (i.e.,address change) to your current registration.

Here's the link to do it by email: http://casey.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/emailsystem/EmailRecordAdd.cfm
