Probably because those highly effective federal laws prohibited him from acquiring one. In fact, I'll bet he was on his waiting period when he tried to stab all of those folks. Obviously, there is no other way to get a gun except from a liscensed firearms dealer in accordance with all of the federal, state, and local laws. Otherwise it would be illegal, and hence, quite impossible. Thank God gun control works!
