What opportunities would there be for a jet spouse to get her master's/phd without having to move away and do the geo-bachelorette thing? She's interested in liberal arts, English specifically. It seems like all the bases are pretty far removed from decent schools. Anyone have any info/experience with something like this?

I'm interested in the same sort of thing. However my wife will have her M.S. in Aerospace Engineering. She'll be looking for a Ph.D. in either Biomedical or A.E.

Not a lot of engineering jobs near the Naval Air Stations are there?

She's worried that she won't be able to find a good job if I'm fortunate enough to become a pilot.

Pretty tough situation. Judging by your spouse's credentials, I'm going to assume that Texas A&M Kingsville and the University of West Florida aren't going to do it for you.

Essentially, you're kind of stuck during flight school. You'll start in Pensacola then remain there or go to Corpus for primary. Only schools remotely close are those that I mentioned above, and they're definitely no good for the technical degrees, maybe liberal arts, but not very prestigious. That eats up around 6-8 months of time. Then, it's off to advanced which will either be in Kingsville or Meridian for Jets and remaining in Corpus or Pensacola for Props and Helos. Again, same situation, no decent schools, in fact it's probably worse around the jet bases.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. West Coast Helo guys are stationed at North Island in southern California. No problem getting close to great schools there. East Coast guys in all platforms will be in the Norfolk area. I'm not sure about which exact schools are there, but it's close enough that you could commute to Maryland or something and kind of tough it out and only see each other 3 nights a week or something.

But, like you said, bottom line, during the 18 months to two years that it takes to get winged, definitely no good schools for the technical graduate degrees, and probably pretty slim with low credentials for the liberal arts.

That's alot of good info, but I think FlyingBeagle is done with Primary and has selected jets.

Probably a mute point, but Norfolk to Maryland would be one HELL of a commute...

As an aside ODU is in Norfolk and I thin that is a good school. Also I think William and Mary is within reasonable commuting distance.

ODU is there and is a good school. There is also NSU (Norfolk State Univ.) which if you are white, you can get a scholarship for being a minority (no sh!t, my wife did), Hampton Univ., and NS Norfolk has many distance learning type places that are friendly to military (UMUC, Troy State and ERAU to name a few)

Good luck.

Dude, it's "moot."

Say this again and I'll call the grammar Nazi gestapo, then you are toast.:toast_125

Interesting how a thread on English graduate programs got threadjacked by poor grammar. :icon_tong

I'll pass on the ODU suggestion to her. I was surprised that William and Mary doesn't have a graduate english proogram. WTF? I don't understand how a self respecting school can do that (no offense to any WM grads).

Is she totally screwed if I get stationed anywhere but Norfolk? Anything nearby Lemoore? Also, how are shore tours for jet guys? If she can't get her degree on my sea tour, I'd like to do my shore tour near a school she could get excited about. Is there a way to do this without putting me on the dead end career track? She's been incredibly supportive of me as I've gone after my dreams, so I desperately want to return the favor for her. Still, I'd like to find a way to make this work for both of us.

She is a huge literature nerd, but very cute nonetheless. . . :D

Nothing is impossible. My wife finished her M.A. in Occupational Therapy by doing a half-online/half-on-site deal at Barry University in Miami while I have been here in P-cola in Advanced. She did her coursework at home while holding down a full-time job as a Speech Therapist and flew or drove to Miami every other weekend for three years (we were in Tampa for the first two). If you want something and want it from a quality place you have to sacrifice. Yeah it cost us some money and sucked travel-wise for her, but she's already seeing an amazing bump in pay and her job prospects at my follow-on are looking mighty nice. No problems here with a wife making waaaay more than I do!

Because the "self-respecting" aspect of W&M is that they teach undergrads first and foremost. Kinda why they stuck with the term "college" and not "university" (which is just their take on the terminology..)

There's something of an issue in many "self-respecting" schools with professors who come there for research and to teach grad students. That's great for the school's prestige, but those same profs have no interest in undergrads and it shows in the poor quality of teaching they provide to them.
